KFC has been around for so long, and they have accompanied us from the first time we have tried fried chicken till now.

What’s your fondest memory about KFC? Was it where you had a meal with your secondary school crush after class or was it the de-facto place to chill at with your friends after CCA on a Saturday?

Here are 10 interesting facts about KFC you probably didn’t know, didn’t care and cannot believe!

KFC doesn’t stand for anything
As most of us know, KFC actually means Kentucky Fried Chicken. But when the diet trend was on the rise in the early 90s, they decided to market their brand as simply KFC without the word ‘fried’ to affect their business. Doesn’t make too big a difference when you look at the chicken, does it?

The founder of KFC
That would be the old white man, remember the statue outside KFC before they got removed? Yes, that’s Sanders. He’s had a pretty tough childhood, hence, he had to learn to cook. He was frustrated with algebra in school too (LIKE MOST OF US) and eventually dropped out of school. So don’t worry if you can’t do algebra. You can always go out and fry some chicken.

Sanders started KFC by serving it at roadsides
After 25 years of odd jobs, Sanders started to make money by selling food to passing drivers by the roadside. It was so good he earned the title of honorary colonel from the Kentucky governor. He eventually opened a restaurant and motel, developing his secret recipe used by today’s KFC.

Sander’s franchising plans
He started his franchising plans when he met Pete Harman, a restaurant owner. In less than a decade, there were over 600 KFC outlets in U.S. and Canada.

KFC’s gravy had changed after Sanders sold it
After much convincing, Sanders sold KFC to 2 guys, John Brown Jr. and Jack Massey. It was then when the gravy was changed because the two guys thought that Sander’s recipe was too tedious and expensive. The gravy they made after is the gravy of the current KFC today.

Sander opened a shop as a competitor
Would you believe this? He even started a competing shop called Claudia Sanders when KFC changed so much. This restaurant still exists today as Claudia Sanders Diner House. If you chance upon it, you better get in there to eat!

The chicken recipe is still a SECRET
Nobody knows the recipe—except a few selected members of the company. These people were never made known to the public, and the recipe is even kept in locks at the KFC headquarters today.

There were people who almost succeeded in creating the secret recipe
Many people tried to create the secret recipe but failed. However, there is one guy who came close enough to the 11 herbs and spices with the help of others. Even though it failed in the end, it was said to be just as good and people were not able to taste the difference.

KFC is the traditional Christmas eve dinner
IN JAPAN. Foreigners in the country replaced their Christmas dinner with fried chicken when they couldn’t find a turkey.

Fake KFC restaurants
Many have tried to replicate KFC’s chicken, and there are even ridiculous restaurants around the world with similar but yet hilarious restaurant names such as OFC, FCK and so on. You don’t want to know or eat from these restaurants.
