I‘m sure we still remember the time in secondary school where every year we are made to go to a camp and every year it just gets tougher until sec 3 where it became the ultimate challenge.

Some of us had it at Pulau Ubin, or at some outdoor adventure camp at some of the most ulu places in Singapore, and some even go as far as Kota Tinggi in Malaysia. Although it was really fun while it lasted, here are some painful memories that we will never forget.

First time leaving our parents for so long

For the sheltered and protected kids of Singapore, leaving our parents and going to some place where even the birds do not shit at, is scary. It may sound really exciting to finally get our parents off our back, but after 2 days of living in tents and drinking weird water, most of the kids just can’t wait to get get to their comfy homes and love of their parents.

It is actually cold

We might complain that Singapore is hot all the time, but wait till you are made to sleep in a tent at night. That’s when it gets really cold. The sleeping bags might be thick, but the floor is cold, and wind is cold, everything is cold and you feel like you’ll die by 4am.

Bathing is so awkward

Seriously. Some camps don’t even have doors for the individual cubicles, if there is even any cubicles at all. You can only grit your teeth and try to hide yourself as you strip down to the skin when you bath. And clambering around hugging all of your bathroom items and trying not to drop or mix up any with your friend’s is really tough work. Not to mention that dude who takes forever to bathe.

High elements

The staple of any outdoor adventure camp, is also the first time we are confronted by the reality of height. All of us will be excited AF when waiting for our turn below, but when we are strapped onto the harness and climbed onto the deck, we look down and HOLY SHIT GET ME OUT OF HERE.

Feeling so dirty

Partly because you cannot really clean yourself that thoroughly, partly because you are sleeping in tents, partly because there’s mud all over the place, and partly because you are made to sweat all the time. You just cannot feel clean at a camp.

Long queue for food

When you are dead tired and shit hungry, you still have to do the stupid food cheer properly and then survive the ridiculously long queue to get the food. At least the food is going to be the best you’ve ever tasted because you are just so hungry.

Snoring friend

Every class will have this big fat guy who is usually so nice and lovable but during the camp you all find out that he snores. Loud. Like flushing a toilet every time he breathes. And all of you cannot sleep and just want to smother him to death with a pillow sleeping bag.

Enthu friend

Sometimes you blame yourself for not exercising regularly, sometimes you blame your friend for being too fit. But we all know that one guy who seems to have unlimited energy and always have the strength to go one more time and participate in everything and will not fall asleep at night. And we just want to go back into the tent and die there.

Snakes and bugs

Humans are generally not very happy with sharing their personal space with other animals, especially snakes and spiders and worms and shit. We hate them.

Sad ending

The camp always ends right when we start to get used to them. Always.
