Apple fans, this is one company you do not want to be a part of.

A photo of a Chinese company’s internal memo – threatening to fire anyone who buys the not-yet-released iPhone 7 – has gone viral on social media.

Calling it a “Patriotic Notice”, the Hangzhou-based Bina Industry also states that “for employees who already have iPhones, the company will help destroy your old iPhone, and compensate those who decide to change brands”.

It goes on to state the compensation rates for the various models: for the iPhone 4, 5, and 6; it’s 1,000 yuan (SGD $203.50), 1,500 yuan (SGD $305.25) and 2,500 yuan (SGD $508.62) respectively – that’s more than half the price of a brand new, uncontracted iPhone.

The notice ends off with a patriotic rallying cry of “Let China be in love with made-in-China.”

If you’re wondering what caused the sudden iPhone hate – just last week, China lost its claim over disputed waterways in the South China Sea to the Philippines.

As for how the US comes into the picture? It has openly shown support of the ruling (due to its Mutual Defense Treaty that promises to protect the Philippines during conflicts), which is why Bina Industry is calling for a boycott of all iPhones.

And they’re not the only ones.

Vendors of Chinese online retailer Taobao have made use of public resentment against Philippines to drum up sales.

The first one reads, “Come order if you support the Philippines. I’ll follow the shipment address and take care of you!!”

While the second one says, “We are against buying mangoes from the ‘Philippines dogs’. Starve them to death, support China.”

Over the past few days, protests were also held in several cities in China, from Changsha in Hunan Province to Hebei in Jiangsu Province. They called for a boycott of foreign brands – especially for fast-food chains KFC and McDonald’s – holding banners that read “Eating American KFC is a loss of face for our ancestors”.
