Everything About the New Vocation, Cyber Defence, in 60 Sec

MINDEF will be setting up a new cyber command, called Defence Cyber Organisation, which will be responsible for developing cyber defence strategies and policies.

As part of the SAF, NSmen and Full-Time National Servicemen will be roped in to play a bigger role in the security of SAF’s military networks.

Yes, literally, keyboard warriors.

There will also be a new Cyber Defence Group created, which comprises two operational units for 24/7 defence of the military networks, and a Cyber Test and Evaluation Centre (CyTec). CyTec has been operational since 2015, but only publicly announced last week. As such, the exact numbers of serving cyber defence personnel are unclear.

However, as MINDEF plans to expand the number to 2,600 in a decade, new cyber defence vocations for NSFs have been created, and the first batch will begin in August 2017.

The new vocations will be extremely selective and demanding, and only those NSmen or NSFs with the relevant academic background or work experience will be considered. According to the Second Minister of Defence Ong Ye Kung, the selectiveness will be comparable to commandos or naval divers.

The selection and testing can even begin before enlistment, through established local cyber competitions, camps and activities, as well as selection tests.

This means anyone who wants to even have a chance of entering these vocations must be already extremely proficient in cyber defence related skills. Which means most of you out there are out of luck, unfortunately (trolling online doesn’t count as a “related skill”). Don’t expect this vocation to be a chance at lepaking through your 2 years of NS.

After all, it’s going to be like the commandos, or the NDU!
