McD’s Creamy Herb Chicken Pie Review: It’s Like Eating PewDiePie

Let’s take it one step at a time for this review.

So, for the start, you see this promotional video online

Wow, cool. The ASMR feel is definitely there. There seems to be at least a million ingredients in the pie.

Yay, finally not a pie that’s filled with boiling sweetness!

Then of course you’d have to check out the description in McDonald’s website. Here you go:

If you can’t read:

Our first-ever savoury pie is a burst of creaminess that packs all the goodness of chicken, carrots, potatoes, peas and mushrooms, in a crispy and flaky pie crust – the first of its kind at McDonald’s.

Hmmm….lit. Though I don’t know where the “herb” comes into play, but anyways.

So we’d definitely have to steal our boss’s credit card for this.

I mean it’s the first-ever savoury pie leh. First of its kind at McDonald’s leh. How can miss, right?

(Yes, that’s our Instagram account; do follow us ‘coz we’ll have giveaways regularly! If we hit 3,000 followers by this week, we’ll do a giveaway on the phone our fake model is holding here!)

First Look

From an Instagram point of view, it passes with brown colour. The colour and texture match what’s seen in the video and website.

Although I’ve got to admit that our photographer might take credit for the IG-worthy shot.

But moving on: how does it taste?

First Bite

One word: It’s thin.

Just compare this…

…with this.

Spot the difference? The one in the website looks like someone from TAF Club and the one I’ve looks like someone who has a Gold in IPPT.

And if you look closer, you’ll realize the crust is relatively thick: I feel like I’m having a Chris Pine (Crust Pie, I mean) instead of a creamy (?) herb (?) chicken (?) pie.

Simply put, I feel cheated.

But even so, if it tastes good, I don’t mind feeling cheated. A wise man once said, it’s not about the quantity, but about the quality.

Unfortunately, the quality isn’t here, too.

Test Taste

I’ve absolutely no idea why it’s called a Creamy Herb Chicken Pie.

After downing the entire thing, I still can’t taste any herbs – do I have to buy it myself and insert it in? Or did we order the wrong pie?

Other than that, it tastes almost similar to any chicken pie you can find in a bakery. However, unlike those in bakeries whereby the creamy chicken sinks into the puff perfectly, this doesn’t. Instead, the crust is so hard and independent that I savour both the fillings and the crust separately.

It’s akin to putting a chicken patty into the pie: they just can’t blend well.

Granted that the taste isn’t dull, McDonald’s pies tend to go well with juicy and fruity fillings (other than the chocolate pie lah), not something creamy that feels microwaved.

Even the aesthetics failed as the filling wouldn’t ooze out like how other pies would.

While the creamy (herb?) chicken by itself is pretty succulent, it would match well with bread instead. Or even rice. But definitely not with that flaky pie crust.

But hey, hold your horses if you decide to go for KFC tonight instead.

Because there’s the Samurai Burger, and that, once again, shone.

Samurai Burger

I don’t have Gordon Ramsay’s tongue so I can’t tell if the taste is exactly the same as last year’s Samurai burger, but to me, it’s similar, so I’m going to be lazy, and just copy and paste the review that my colleague wrote last year:

Each bite provided a succulent mouthful of chicken meat, with a relishing mix of mayo and teriyaki sauce.

It just glides down my throat, clean as a whistle.

Granted, as I was saying, the chicken patty could be bigger. I finished the thing in less than one minute.

But it’s just… shiok.

And guess what? I feel the same way this year, though I finished it in two minutes instead.

So if there’s any consolation, at least the Japanese burger made it right.

Creamy Herb Chicken Pie: 2 / 5 Stars

Samurai Burger: 4.5 / 5 Stars

But of course, as usual, don’t take my words for it. Try them and let us know!
