If you came in because of the headline, don’t worry, this isn’t click bait. And you’ll be surprised at the exact reason why NS was made compulsory for females in Norway.
AWARE, you’ll love this.
All for gender equality
Back in 2013, Norway pushed through a bill that made conscription in the army (or NS) compulsory for females.
And before you think they don’t have enough personnel for their armed forces, it’s not. They pushed through the bill in a bid for gender equality as joining the armed forces was a huge achievement in Norway.
Every year, the Scandinavian country only require less than 10,000 new recruits and they have more than 60,000 people available for call ups.
“It enables you to cut the umbilical cord. It’s good that girls and boys get the same opportunities,” says new conscript Marianne Westum.
Chiong together, sleep together
If you belonged to Pegasus company in BMT, female recruits bunk on the fourth floor, separated from the guys.
In Norway, things are a bit different. The male and female recruits room together in a unisex bunk where they sleep, rest and bond together.
It helps to combat sexual harassment
Most might think that putting guys and girls together in the same bunk is a recipe for disaster but the people at the Norwegian Research Defence Establishment disagree.
“We see that exposure to each other increases tolerance, acceptance and understanding toward each other.
“You don’t shit in your own nest. You don’t want to have sex and fraternise with anyone in your room for example or in your small unit because that makes it quite awkward.” – Ms Nina Hellum, researcher at the Norwegian Research Defence Establishment.
A survey done in 2014 showed that female soldiers are in favour of unisex bunks even though 18% said they were subjected to inappropriate behaviour.
So yes, guys, dreams to come true.
