Move aside, Picasso, your time is over. We’re here to shine the light on this new photo app that’ll make us seem like amazing painters.

With this app, those with zero talent in art aka me will seem like the most talented artist in the world.

There are tons of image-editing apps around, but none that turns images into impressive paintings within seconds.

Prisma

Developed by Russians, Prisma uses artificially intelligent cloud processing to paint a Picasso-worthy picture. It not only slaps the filter over your photo like most filter apps, Prisma actually creates the photo from scratch.

How to use it

Simply select a photo from your phone’s library or take an image on the spot, then select one of the 33 fun filters that are inspired by famous painters such as Picasso, Van Gogh and the like. There are even filters inspired by popular patterns and comics such as the DC comic book illustrations.

In less than 10 seconds, you’ll immediately see the change of your picture and you’re able to adjust the intensity of the filter to your liking. While it takes a few seconds for your photos to become all artistic, the image was actually sent to Prisma’s servers in Moscow and then back to your phone.

Neural networks

According to Prisma’s CEoo and co-founder Alexey Moiseenkov, Prima uses three neural networks that each performs a different task – one for analysing the user’s image, another to extract the art style and one to apply it to the image.

He found an existing computer algorithm for converting images into artwork and after two months, he and his team managed to improve it. From approximately 10 minutes to an hour required to process a single image; it now takes less than 10 seconds.

He plans to further improve the algorithm, such that you’re able to turn an entire mobile video clip into a live animated scene. Well, you can be sure that we’ll be waiting for that!

Prisma App in action (or at least, the results)

We’re pretty darn impressed with this photo app and while waiting for the video version to be released, we’re sure to have a whale of fun transforming all our photos into cool artistic ones.

Now watch this time-lapse video created by Drew Geraci who turned all 2,500 frames using the Prisma app. One by one.
