Instead of paying the full amount to fly premium economy, now you can bump up your economy class ticket at a cheaper rate!

Just this week, SIA announced that they will be introducing a new bidding system for seat upgrades called mySQupgrade. Customers who have booked tickets in economy class can get an email invitation seven days before departure to bid for an upgrade to premium economy.

Here’s the catch: you can’t just sign up for the bidding as and when you like. You actually have to be invited by the airlines, and it’s up to their “sole discretion” on who gets the invitation.

A “strength meter” on the page will indicate how strong your bid is, but this doesn’t mean you’ll be successful as it ultimately depends on seat availability. According to SIA, you should “consider bidding the highest amount you are willing to pay” if you want to stand a better chance of getting the upgrade.

And if you’re thinking of bidding $10 and praying that others are too lazy to bother, here’s some bad news for you – bids must lie within a “preset range”.

If you’re wondering how much you should bid in order to make full use of this budding scheme, here’s how much it costs to fly economy from New York to Frankfurt:

And the cost of flying premium economy:

Since the fare difference is only around $350 between the two classes, it’d be smart not to exceed that amount for your bid.
