Living in a tropical and humid country, we have grown accustomed to the warm climate which is just part and parcel of everyday life to us. However, the sweltering heat caused by El Nino recently has caused everyone to sweat profusely, especially during the daytime when the afternoon sun is at its fiercest.

Seeking some relief from the scorching temperatures, many of us turn to the comfort of modern conveniences. It’s at times like this that we feel especially fortunate to have air-conditioning at home or even at our workplaces. But an unwelcome side effect of all this air-conditioning? The huge amount of electricity generated which corresponds to the sky high electricity bill that you are dreading to receive at the end of the month.

Surely there is some way that you can keep yourself cool as a cucumber without racking up a jaw-dropping amount on your bills? Well, the good news is yes, you actually can accomplish that.

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers, they have recommended that the optimal temperature to keep you cool and save you from getting a heart attack when you open the electricity bill is approximately 25°C. It is said that for each 1°C that you refrain from lowering, you can save from 5% to 15% off your bill.

Not only that, it is also more environmental friendly, as you will be using less energy as well. 25°C is the best temperature to achieve that tricky balance between allowing you to get comfortably cool and ensuring you do not waste electricity.

Think that this is not cold enough for you and insisting on lowering the temperature even further? Perhaps you can try putting heavy curtains or shades to keep the sunlight streaming in thus cranking up the temperature of the room.

Consider also dressing in clothes made of thinner material, you definitely don’t need thick material in this unforgiving heat! You might also consider checking the air-conditioning unit itself, as it could be in need of servicing and not in the best condition.

If all else fails, allow yourself a little break from the stifling air by planning a short trip to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands. While it might not be as cold as it was in its heyday, it is definitely way cooler than those of us perspiring down here in the lowlands.
