S’pore Now Has Over 1 Million COVID-19 Reported Cases, Which Means About 1 Out of 5 of Us Were Infected

When COVID-19 first started, this number of infectees in Singapore was unthinkable.

1 million?! Out of over 5-million people?! What is the government doing?!

Well, believe it or not, Singapore did break the 1-millionth case mark just yesterday (19 Mar 2022).

And our daily number of new cases are still in the 5-digit stratosphere.

But should you panic and buy as many toilet papers as you possibly can now? Maybe not.

Here’s what you need to know.

S’pore Now Has Over 1 Million COVID-19 Reported Cases, Which Means Almost 1 Out of 5 of Us Were Infected

On 19 Mar 2022, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 10,244 new COVID-19 cases.

With that, Singapore has crossed the 1-millionth mark for COVID-19 cases.

The current total number of cases stands at 1,007,518; Given that Singapore only has a population of 5.9 million, that means about one in five people here in Singapore has been infected once.

However, it’s not all bad news.

Falling Numbers

The number reported on Saturday (10,244) was a drop compared to a day before where 10,594 cases were reported.

We can expect to see a further downward trend in the number of daily reported cases if the infection rate holds true.

Currently, the infection rate is at 0.70, having remained below one for the 18th consecutive day.

The number of hospitalisations has also fallen; MOH reported 1,130 hospitalised COVID-19 cases, down from 1,175 cases the day before.

In addition, there were three deaths, down from nine deaths the day before. With that, the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Singapore stands at 1,194.

27 COVID-19 cases are currently in the ICU, and 127 cases require oxygen supplementation.

New Case Details

Of the 10,244 cases reported on 19 Mar 2022, 142 were imported cases.

91 were detected through ART while the remaining 51 were detected through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.

Of the local cases (10,102), a majority of them (7,912) were detected through ART; this means they were assessed by doctors and deemed to be low-risk cases with mild symptoms.

Another 2,190 cases were detected through PCR tests.

Doing Well So Far

Singapore has managed the COVID-19 pandemic pretty well so far, whether you want to admit it or not.

After all, even with our daily COVID-19 cases hitting 5-digit figures and crossing the 1-million-case mark, you can barely see the impact in our everyday life, compared to earlier in the pandemic.

True, visits to residential homes and hospital wards will remain suspended until 3 Apr 2022, but the Multi-ministry Task Force (MTF) has already revealed plans to “streamline”, or ease COVID-19 restrictions.
