Last week, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said in a television interview the government is preparing more facilities to deal with 5,000 daily cases in the future.
It seemed like a crazy prediction then, but the warning is getting more and more prescient every day.
COVID-19 cases are continuing to rise, and sadly, so are fatalities.
If you missed the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) daily update yesterday (1 Oct), here are all the details:
8 COVID-19 Fatalities
Eight more COVID-19 cases succumbed to the disease, bringing our death toll to 103.
Seven of the fatalities were Singaporean men and one was a Singaporean woman, all aged between 66 and 96 years.
Four had been unvaccinated against COVID-19, two had been partially vaccinated, and two had been fully vaccinated.
All had underlying medical conditions, MOH said, though it did not specify what they were.
2,909 New COVID-19 Cases Reported; 2,079 From the Community
A whopping 2,909 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday, the fourth consecutive day that daily infections have exceeded 2,000.
Among the new cases were 2,079 cases in the community and 818 dormitory residents. Of the local cases, there were 556 seniors above the age of 60.
In addition, 12 imported cases were detected; seven tested positive upon arrival while the other five developed the illness during quarantine.
No New Large Clusters
The only good news we got yesterday is that no new large clusters were found.
Several of our existing clusters grew, however, including the Blue Stars Dormitory cluster which had 21 more cases linked to it.
It now has 442 infections, making it our biggest active cluster at the moment.
61 cases were also added to the 9 Defu South Street 1 dormitory cluster, taking its total to 212.
One new infection was linked to the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre cluster, which now hs a total of 165 cases, comprising 150 workers at the market, four trade visitors and 11 household members of cases.
The Woodlands Care Home cluster had three more cases linked to it, bringing its total to 31. Of the 31 cases, 30 are residents and one is a staff member.
1,356 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 34 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,356 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
222 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 34 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 214 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98.2% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Monday, 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.

Seniors Encouraged to Stay At Home, Order Takeway Instead of Dining in
With the number of daily cases climbing steadily toward the 3,000 mark, many are concerned for those most vulnerable to the disease.
This is why the Agency of Integrated Care strongly urged seniors 60 and above to stay at home for the next four weeks to reduce their chances of contracting the virus.
Yesterday (1 Oct), the National Environmental Agency encouraged seniors to order takeaway instead of dining in as well.
“They should in particular avoid dine-in meals or chats over drinks at hawker centres at this time,” it added.
They can also ask their family members to buy food for them if possible.
