Nicknamed ‘Little Thailand’, Golden Mile Complex is affectionately known by all for its largely Thai-centric atmosphere, offering wide varieties of Thai food and shopping for everyone. However, here are 10 facts that you probably are not aware of!

It used to have another name
Yes that’s right, the iconic Golden Mile Complex used to be called Woh Hup Complex. Sounds pretty weird doesn’t it?

It hosts a large water fight
Every year during Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, visitors at the complex engage in one huge water fight where they splash water on each other using anything from buckets to water-guns. Seems cool!

It cost a whopping $18 million to build
We look at it now and we see dirty walls and run down buildings, but it was actually built for $18 million almost 40 years ago.

It was criticized by a Member of Parliament
Some years ago, MP Ivan Png described the Complex as a  ‘vertical slum’ and criticized how the shopkeepers and residents put up various items on their balconies and made the place look bad.

Despite that, it was 3rd in a conservation poll
In 2008, Straits Time conducted a poll regarding which landmarks the readers wanted to preserve, and Golden Mile Complex actually came in third!

The view is pretty good
Despite the shabby interior, the apartments right at the top of the Complex actually have a panoramic view of the surroundings, which sounds rather nice because the building is relatively tall.

Highly valued design
The architecture of the mall has been praised by many critics and is regarded as very prominent and valuable. It was even included in a tour in the Singapore Architectural Festival back in 2007 because of the impressive design!

It boasts 411 shops
One look at the place and you would expect it to be cramped and small on the inside and, well, it slightly is, but it’s pretty impressive that they have managed to fit 411 shops inside of it.

Built by really capable architects
The firm that designed this is also responsible for other famous landmarks such as Resorts World Sentosa, Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay, and even The Dubai Mall, the 10th biggest shopping mall in the world.

It might not last
As the building is privately owned, the owners might decide to sell off the complex to developers that could subsequently demolish it, thus causing us to lose this iconic landmark forever. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen!
