10 awesome mobile games we played in the 90s that are more addictive than Candy Crush

In the future, we’ll tell our grandchildren with a sparkle in our eyes about a time when mobile phones had buttons. Pressing a button 3 times to get a certain letter will sound so ridiculous and unimaginable to them. And they will never know how we used to be able to text without looking at our phones.

And most importantly, we’ll tell them about the games that we played that were so simple, yet so good!

Snake
Every person who has owned a phone will have played Snake before. It was a game that you couldn’t win- you played until you lost. In this game, the player guides the snake to dots of food inside a box and consumes them, causing the length of the snake to increase. And hours of our time was spent chasing food around a box.

Racing car
This was the game we played before Need 4 Speed. This was the game we went to after watching Fast and Furious. Despite being so lame and unrealistic, it gave us the thrills that no other game can give us today, simply because back then there was no other car racing games we can play.

Bounce
The most adventurous red ball we’ve ever seen. This ball is all about going the distance, exploring uncharted territory, jumping through hoops and avoiding the deadly spikes. All of us would’ve been addicted to this game at some point of time. The younger ones would’ve begged their parents to lend them their phones so they can play this game.

Tetris
This is a timeless classic, also another game that could never be won. Tetris is the gold standard for basic but awesome games. There is no feeling in all of gaming as good as waiting for that thin long blue piece, slowly letting pieces build up, bringing you closer to your own demise, until, finally, it shows up. And BOOM four rows disappear.

Space impact
We flew through the hazardous caves of outer space. We shot alien UFOs, we avoided asteroids, bullets, and we gave our all to defeat the bosses. We were even better than Luke Skywalker at killing the bad guys.

Asteroid
Also another game in outer space but instead of shooting aliens, this game is about shooting rocks and breaking them up before they hit your spacecraft at the center of the screen. These are the games that are responsible for giving us kids the false impression that outer space is an exciting dangerous and crowded place instead of the cold empty and lame place that it really is.

Bejeweled
This is the original Candycrush. And for all the reasons that Candycrush is so terrifyingly addictive, Bejeweled was as well.

Solitaire
This is the game that the adults played, and as a kid, we played them too. Just that we didn’t know how it worked. And after playing hundreds of games of Solitaire, I think we can safely assume that none of us have any idea how to deal the cards in real life.

Checkers
That one game that is actually demanding on our brains. And after a long long time you finally realize that if neither you nor the phone made a mistake, you’re going to end up in a draw. Every single time. And you feel so bloody cheated.

Sudoku
Mom always say Sudoku makes you good at maths. We don’t know how true that is, but we definitely still played the game. Partially because we hoped our maths can improve, but mainly because we don’t believe we can’t solve that stupid shit.
