While there may be a number of people who are fond of kissing, there are also a good handful that are not too keen on it. Being Asians, we may not be as affectionate as we should be. But if you like smooching whilst your bae doesn’t, perhaps it’s time to let her/him in on these benefits of kissing that will probably change their minds about this lovey dovey act.

Improves your mood and decreases stress
Do you realise that after you and your bae have a passionate kiss, it always seems that the both of you are in higher spirits and feel lighter and more carefree? The reason is because kissing results in the release of these mood- elevating hormones called dopamine and serotonin into your brain.

Oxytocin and endorphins are also released from the brain that heightens the romantic bond between a couple and calms the mind and the body respectively. Kissing can reduce the production of the stress hormone adrenaline by lowering sympathetic stimulation to the adrenal gland. In fact, one study showed that men who received a passionate kiss before they left for work earned more money so if you are a guy, you know what to tell your bae.

Works to burn off some calories
If your bae happens to be someone who is rather weight conscious, this will definitely get to him/her. A study by Dr. Alexander DeWees showed that a passionate kiss that lasts for about 20 seconds can burn up to 2 to 3 calories per minute. Come to think of it, this is a really good reason to get your bae to pucker up for even longer!

Headache and migraine relief
We all know the harm medicines can do to our body in the long run and in our very stressful daily lives, pain can strike us at any moment, which is something we all dread. If your bae suffers from constant headaches and migraines, encourage him/her to engage in more smooching sessions because kissing results in dilated blood vessels and the release of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins all help to ease tension headaches and migraines.

Menstrual cramps begone!
This is specifically useful if your bae is a lady. All females utterly abhor that time of the month because it leaves us feeling sore, dirty and generally moody. Even then, let your bae know that kissing releases endorphins which not only inhibit pain, but also causes our blood vessels to dilate, which also means that her menstrual cramps will be felt less strongly. Trust me, she will love you even more for it and well, you may get even more than what you bargained for.

Boost immunity and help with allergies
Who would have thought that kissing would even help with these! Apparently when we smooch, the immune cells in our body are boosted to fight outside germs by producing IgA antibodies against them. Puckering up also decreases IgE antibodies, in turn lowering the release of histamine from mast cells, which is what causes allergic reactions. Hooray to kissing!

Kissing leads to a healthy heart
By reducing the sympathetic tone of our heart, kissing lowers the physical stress, which the heart undergoes daily as a result of the psychological stress we face. In fact, studies have shown that men who have sex regularly are 45% less likely to develop heart disease than those who only roll in the hay once a month. Time for that Netflix and chill session perhaps?

Better oral hygiene
While many people may claim that the exchange of fluids during a smooching session can lead to diseases being transferred from one person to another, this point may just turn the tables once and for all. In fact, kissing increases salivation, which results in the release of enzymes that clean up tooth plaque. And we all know plaque causes decay and cavities.

Lowers blood pressure
As we all know by now, kissing dilates blood vessels in the body, which in turn causes a decrease in blood pressure. So the next time your bae comes home from work and you see him/her all stressed up, go in for a long one. Your bae will thank you for that.

Makes physical pain better
You know how in many story books, when a child falls down, the mother will kiss the sore part to make the pain go away? Seems like there is scientific proof after all for this. Apparently, kissing helps to raise the threshold for activation of pain receptors in the body and also causes a release of endorphins, which relieve pain, form our brains. This inhibits the pain pathway and thus provides pain relief. So kiss away and make the pain go away!

Slimmer facial features
Who doesn’t like to have a slimmer face with more defined cheekbones? Tell your bae that he/she can attain that by puckering up more because kissing involves the harmonious group work of 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles. In fact, your neck gets toned in the process too!
