Who doesn’t love ayam penyet? For me, I love Indonesian food–their sauce, style and flavour just create this umami taste in my mouth with every bite. For those who do not know what ayam penyet is, it’s basically fried ‘smashed’ chicken. Marinated first with different herbs and spices, the meat is then smashed with a hammer (hence the name) before being deep-fried to perfection. Believe me, it’s amazing. Try out one of these places below to taste the goodness for yourself.!
Ayam Penyet Ria
Popular among both locals and Indonesians, this place is the place to go if you’re looking for a quick ayam penyet fix. Served with a generous dollop of awesome sambal, you’ll be hard pressed not to order a second plate. Not to mention it is also halal certified. Location: Ayam Penyet Ria, #01-45 Lucky Plaza, 304 Orchard Rd Operating Hours: 11am – 9pm
Resto Surabaya
Flavourful and well marinated with different kinds of spices, this crispy chicken is insanely delicious. And we love how it is not too oily. But just a little heads up, the chilli is crazy spicy! Location: 304 Orchard Road, Lucky Plaza #02-63/#2-64 Operating Hours: 11.30am – 9pm
Lucky Surabaya
An affiliate to the main outlet at Lucky Plaza, this place packs the same, if not an even better punch when it comes to their famous ayam penyet. Crispy on the outside but juicy on this inside, there’s nothing you would crave more than this gorgeous chicken. Location: #05-26/26A, Far East Plaza, 14 Scotts Road, 228213
Waroeng Penyet
Well marinated, this place is one that’ll we definitely recommended. Diners can choose whether they want thigh or breast meat and if they prefer hot or mild chilli. Not to mention they are super generous with their crumbly batter bits, which we all know is the best part of the dish! Location: 81 Marine Parade Central #01-638 Operating Hours: 11am – 9pm
Nur Indah Kitchen
Instead of serving just plain rice, Nur Indah cooks their rice with chicken stock. The hearty portions are great for anyone with a huge appetite. While their marinade lacked a little fragrance, it makes up for the tenderness and juiciness of the meat. Location: 7, Bedok Food Centre, Blk 1 Bedok Road Operating Hours: 7am – 11pm
Sri Bistari Changi Village Famous Nasi Ayam Penyet
While the plating of this dish could be a little better, the taste of the chicken is actually really good. Well, they say we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, right? The chilli is sweet and spicy, great for those who can’t take super spicy foods! Location: #B1-31, Golden Mile Food Centre, 505 Beach Road Operating Hours: 10am – 10pm
Singapore Poly’s Food Court 2
Most Singapore Poly students will know of the famous ayam penyet at FC2. It can compete with tons of restaurants with its huge portion and fragrant rice. Plus it is super cheap too! Location: 500 Dover Rd Operating Hours (term time): Mon-Fri – 7.30am to 8pm
Uncle Penyet Fusion Stall
ocated in NUS, this store is known for its amazing ayam penyet. The long lines of hungry students can attest to that. Not only that, the ayam penyet also clinched the Grand Winner for Best Food on Campus Contest award. Well, looks like we will all be making our way to NUS soon! Location: NUS Operating Hours (term time): 7.30am – 4pm, Sat: 7.30am – 3pm
Mawar Merah Ayam Penyet
Using a sweeter sauce on the ayam penyet, each bite produces a burst of turmeric flavour that goes especially well with the rice. There are other choices available as well, and spicy lovers can opt for a spicier version of the chilli too! But we suggest asking to separate the chilli because it is really spicy. Location: 165 Bukit Merah Central
Nasi Putih Ayam Penyet
With a tender chicken and delicious sides, this place is a definitely must go if you’re nearby that area. The chilli is just right, not too spicy and yet not too sweet. For the price, we would say this place might very well be on our top charts! Location: Blk 6 Jalan Bukit Merah, #01-05 ABC Brickworks Food Centre
