10 best cafes in JB for you to café-hop, because you’ve conquered S’pore

Last Updated on 2016-11-05 , 12:16 pm

I always look forward to a café outing. Give me a cappuccino, a matcha latte or even a masala chai and I’m a happy person. I enjoy sipping my cuppa as I take in the quaint décor that’s in place, and the sense of individuality each café has. Here are my top 10 picks of cafés in JB that you simply, simply have to try out.

It’s right next to the historical Hiap Joo Kopitiam and their famous banana cakes. They specialise in a different kind of cake here – millie crepe cakes. The coffee is as good as it gets here! Jalan Ibrahim, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, 10 am – 10 pm daily

Chaiwalla & Co Container Café

This is a halal joint which has some crazy good Thai milk teas. Ask for a kurang manis version as it can get a bit overwhelmingly sweet. Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Mon – Fri (9.30 am – 10.30 pm) / Sat & Sun (9.30 am – 1 am)

This is one of the new hipster cafés in JB town, and it has a variety of coffee beans for you to sample from. Pastries are delish and limited, but they have a decent stash of muffins and sandwiches. One thing you really ought to try is the cheesecake affogato.
40 Jalan Ibrahim, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, 10am – 8pm

This is probably one of the most photographed cafés I’ve seen on Instagram. There’s a boutique on the top floor, and the café is right below it.
54, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Tue – Thur & Sun (12 pm – 8 pm), Fri & Sat (12 pm – 10 pm)

Another halal joint along Jalan Dhoby which has the best chicken chop in town. A humongous slab of chicken chop is served with a fried egg for RM15 and two tiny sides. The chicken is as good as it gets.
17, Jalan Dhoby, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, 12 pm – 10 pm daily

The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen

This place carries a variety of a different kind – churros. Go for the dark churros to have nibs of cocoa star-studding your churros stick. Another good choice is the churros with a salted egg sauce. A killer combo I tell you.
33, Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, 10 am – 10 pm daily

This is a soft serve shop. My favourite is the earl grey/charcoal soft serve. It’s a bit on the pricier side at RM19.
93, Jalan Kuning, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Mon – Sat (5 pm – 1 am)

Get high-end coffee and pastries for a decent price tag here. The Bana-Nut’s is a signature here, and it’s a marriage of a croissant, peanut butter and banana with ice cream. Go figure.
106, Jalan Trus, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Tue – Sun (9 am – 6 pm)

The Ice-Cream Project (TIP)

You may only have 5 signature flavours to choose from, but they are worth your time. If that’s not your thing, get a cup of the Gryphon Artisan Tea to fuzz you up.
31, Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Tue – Thur (3pm – 10 pm) Fri & Sat (3 pm – 12 am)

Coffee Valley

There’s this dish called the eggslut. A potato coddled egg that’s mixed with cheese, mushrooms and more egg. A bite of heaven. And try their waffles too!
12, Jalan Trus, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Thur – Tue (11.30 am – 8 pm) Closed on Wed
