Pasar malams are a great place to hang out with your friends and fill up your tummy with delicious food. Unfortunately, these pasar malams are not always halal, making our Muslim friends miss out on the full experience. Lucky for everyone, the start of Ramadan has led to halal pasar malams popping up, such as the recent one at Tampines MRT! Awesome right? They are not here forever though but here’s what you can try at these halal pasar malams before they leave, especially for our Muslim friends who are looking for somewhere to break fast.
Dendeng
A hot item, this is sort of the halal version of bak kwa where it is made up of thin slices of dried meat similar to meat jerky. Slightly less sweet, it lets you taste the meat without taking away its essence. It is a great starter for those of you who are looking for something to chew on while you walk around looking for your next meal. Not to worry, it will keep your tummy satisfied but with plenty of space to fill.

Thai Pancake
And now we have Thai food! It just keeps getting better, doesn’t it? This Thai snack is sweet yet savoury and it is pure bliss. Bananas and batter with a drizzle of condensed milk and choice of other sauces like caramel, gula melaka or Nutella, it is just bound to make you want to go there right now.

Thai rolled ice cream
We would have seen this in a couple of pasar malams but not all of them are up to standard. This one, however, is really good. It has the authenticity of an actual Thai rolled ice cream and the stall is set up by a local entrepreneur, adding a little bit of uniqueness to this dish. Sweet and soft, this ice cream dish is guaranteed to make you come back for more.

Shihlin XXL Chicken
This food choice makes me really happy because now, I can share this delight with my Muslim friends. Usually not a halal dish, our Muslim friends do not get the chance to try this juicy and crispy chicken. Thanks to the Ramadan Bazaar, we can all come together to enjoy this dish. Spicy, tender and flavourful, this is a definite must-have, especially for all chicken-lovers. If you feel that the spice of this chicken does not meet your standards, feel free to go ask for more chilli powder!

Crispy Sotong
For those of you with a big appetite for seafood, this is a must-try. Apparently Argentinian squids, these sotongs are so huge, you might want to consider sharing if you are not a big eater. Fried to perfection, and ladened with chilli powder, you might want to keep a bottle of water handy. Also, it is very popular at the moment so be prepared for long queues.

Ramly Burger
If you are going, “same old, same old”, hold on while I tell you why this is a must-try. The Ramly burger at this bazaar is perfect. The juicy tender meat patty is cooked to perfection and the buns are fried to an amount I would say, “just right”. The egg is not watery and it covers the patty neatly. Add chilli sauce to this and the result is pure satisfaction. This is a dish you have to try so do ensure that there is space in your tummy for some extra goodness.

Pisang Goreng Sambal Kicap
It already sounds good doesn’t it? I am sure we are all familiar with the pisang goreng that can be found in Kopitiams. But with sambal kicap? I am pretty sure it is almost nowhere to be found because apparently, it is more of a Malaysian dish. Just imagine, piping hot crispy pisang goreng with this soy sauce chilli dip. Enough to make your mouth water huh? Well, now you don’t have to cross the borders to get your fix of this savoury dish!

Durian Goreng
With the durian season being pushed back, I am sure durian lovers like me are looking for ways to satisfy our cravings. The durian goreng, a deep fried crispy exterior with a rich durian flesh interior, is sure to give you the experience of eating a durian just by itself. Though it can be a little sinful, who’s to say you cannot indulge yourself once in a while?

Rainbow Bagels
Say what? Yes these bagels are literally’ rainbow-coloured and it is possible to mistake them for candies. A sweet delight, these bagels are creamy with marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles added to satisfy anyone who has a sweet tooth. Let me just warn you, this will set your bar for dessert so high, everything else would pale in comparison.

Flavoured Churros
Churros, but only better. From flavours like Pandan churros with gula melaka sauce (yum!) to salted egg churros, you are sure to be spoilt for choice. Plus, you can never go wrong because all their flavours taste amazing. Be sure to try more than one and your taste buds will thank you.
