Driving lessons can be very stressful and more often than not, stress leads to a hungry stomach for some of us. So where do you go for some tasty grub before you get behind the practice wheel? Here are some recommendations you can try out the next time you have some time to spare before the next lesson.

The sweet and sour chicken rice bowl at Ah Huat Café
Most of us recognise the name ‘Ah Huat’. If you don’t, you seriously need to crawl out from under the rock you have been living under. Known fondly as the mascot of a brand of Malaysian white coffee, Ah Huat has also ventured further and opened cafes as part of their business.

They give generous servings of tasty local fare. Their sweet and sour chicken rice bowl is a tad pricey (S$7.50) but the portions and taste sure make up for it.

Ban mian at VariNice Eating House
Located at a small and cosy food court just opposite of Bukit Batok Bus Interchange, this bowl of ban mian boasts a slightly thinner and much less powdery as compared to others elsewhere. The egg that is cracked into the soup is also of the perfect consistency, not too hard and not too soft, and at S$3.30 a bowl, a really good deal.

Curry chee cheong fun at Happy Hawker
I love my curry chee cheong fun anytime and at Happy Hawker, they do a mean version of this rice flour dish. The chee cheong fun strips are not too thick, which allows the delicious gravy to be absorbed properly into it, creating a flavour that is both tangy and inviting, and absolutely adored by curry and chee cheong fun lovers alike.

Sliced fish soup at Fatty Weng
Most of us imagine fish soup as bland and tasteless, or as we like to call it, food for the sick. Not the sliced fish soup at Fatty Weng’s. The salted vegetable they added into their soup gives this rather plain-looking and simple dish that slightly savoury punch that cannot be achieved by using normal table salt. Besides fish soup, Fatty Weng also offers up other tasty dishes such as carrot cake, oyster omelette and char kway teow which you can try too.

A selection of their black pepper sauce will be an additional S$0.80.

Zheng Zhong Xiang Gang Yun Tun Mian
Even if you live in the west, you may not know this place. Hidden within Bukit Batok Community Centre’s coffeeshop, Zheng Zhong Xiang Gang’s roast meats are a highlight here. Pair a combination of the various meats with their Wanton Noodles (S$4 – just the wanton noodles), to make a complete, satisfying dish. And don’t worry about the burnt bits on the meat. It’s intentionally done that way to give it that really awesome, caramelised flavour that will leave anyone wanting more.
