Any idea what’s the reason behind “ABC” in the name “ABC Market”? Well, I’m not very sure what’s the official reason, but I’m guessing that it’s because getting cheap and delicious food here is as simple as learning the ABC’s.

This is a humble stall tucked at one corner of the hawker centre and is under the care of an experienced uncle. The best part about the Hokkien Prawn Mee here is that the prawns and sotong in the dish are extremely fresh! I mean, which seafood lover like me wouldn’t appreciate fresh seafood, right?

Another Hokkien Prawn Mee? Let me tell you: this is not any other Hokkien Prawn Mee. They serve a “drier” version of the Hokkien Prawn Mee, which allows the amazing aromas of the prawn-based broth they use to blend perfectly with the smooth noodles which are immersed in it. Even the chilli sauce they provide has a texture unique to its own, which tastes slightly sweet, a little spicy, and loaded with ikan bilis.

ABC Market Best Food 5: Jin Jin Dessert

Some desserts for your sweet tooth perhaps? This stall is especially known for its “Gangster Ice”. You might be wondering what gave it such a cheesy name, but actually, it’s just a play of Chinese words – where the dessert is made of a combination of durian (“liu lian” in Mandarin) and mango (“mang guo” in Mandarin).

The first word of each fruit: “liu” and “mang” was combined and gives the word “liu mang” which sounds like a word that means “gangster” in Mandarin. The name might sound weird, but trust me, the recipe is amazing. Oh, and did I mention? They even have their own website to take online orders.

With flat, yellow wheat noodles cooked al dente couple with a flavourful gravy, and finally topped with secondary ingredients including golden fish nuggets, pork belly slices, and a hard-boiled egg – this makes for an extremely satisfying and filling meal. Do remember to add some minced garlic, cut chilli pepper, and black vinegar which are provided at the side before you dig in!
