Who in the world doesn’t love pancakes? They’re the perfect pick-me-up in the mornings. I love my fluffy darlings with a drizzle of maple syrup, and with some blueberry jam on the side. But that’s just me.
Making them does involve some work, and nothing beats a clean kitchen. So I’m going to share my top ten spots for pancakes in JB.
gCafe, Taman Mount Austin
Biting into their soft, soft pancakes will make you feel like you’re floating in the air. The batter is measured to perfection. Best enjoyed with a dollop of freshly whipped cream and some honey. The price range? Between RM7-RM20.
The café is open daily from 11am to 11pm. Fridays and Saturdays are the exceptions, with an extended hour until midnight.
Pancake House International, No.4 Lebuh Medini Utara
The pancakes here have a good deal of aeration in them. In fact, they’re surprisingly light to the tummy. Get your classic pancakes here or opt for savoury options like the Cheese Pancakes. Their bestseller is the Banana Cinnamon pancake.
The outlet is open from 10am to 10pm daily.
Atlas Coffee Embassy, Taman Mount Austin
This is the fine-dining finesse for pancakes. You get juicy, rich blueberry compote served to you with a stack of pancakes. Add crushed walnuts and some vanilla ice cream for a truly mesmerising bite!
The restaurant is open from 8.30am to 11.00 pm every day, but they close early – at 7.30pm on Sundays.
Black Tree Café, No.1 Jalan Khalidi
Fancy a bite of a black pancake? This cocoa flavoured pancakes pack a punch, and are served with slices of kiwi fruit and strawberries between and on top of them.
The shop’s closed on Mondays and operates in the evenings every other day from 5.00pm to 11.00pm.
Grill Bar the Steakhouse, Taman Pelangi
Savoury pancakes are something you really should try, and the outlet serves you just that. A wooden tray that carries an array of scrambled eggs, caramelised bananas and yep, sugary pancakes to go with the mix.
What an unlikely but delicious marriage!
The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and operate for lunch and dinner on weekdays, and a full noon to 10.30pm service on weekends.
U Dessert, Taman Sutera Utama
This is more of a traditional Chinese take on pancakes, but it’s worth the mention. Why? Because it’s a durian pancake!
Café BLD Breakfast Buffet, Renaissance Hotel Johor Bahru
You might have to drive a bit to get your pancake fix, but these babies come with a wide selection of compotes and jams, and a killer spread of fresh fruit.
Breakfast is served from 6.30am to 10.30am.
Gianni’s Trattoria, 110 Jalan Serampang, Taman Pelangi
Savoury pancakes actually go really well with main courses too. Try the smoked salmon and corn pancake mix here, and surprise your taste buds.
The Italian restaurant is open daily from 11am to 1am.
Jeju Korea BBQ Restaurant, Bukit Indah
An Asian twist to your pancake comes in the form of a Korean seafood pancake. I’ve taken a bite and never turned my back on a plate!
Hotel Jen, Puteri Harbour
Another hotel with a really good spread of sides and a bouncy stack of pancakes to go with them. Head over to the breakfast buffet between 6.30am and 10.30am.
