Ask any Johorean about his favorite spot for local street food, and he will surely have at least one location to share with you.
That’s the one thing I love about the locals there. Just like us, they’re ferociously loyal towards their local street delicacies.
With that, I’ve got this list of THE BEST 10 street foods in the very streets of JB. You’ll want to print a copy of this and walk right across the Causeway to try them out over the weekend. Or weekday.
It doesn’t matter when. You have my word. Give it a bite.
Bukit Chagar Roti Canai
We call it prata, and they refer to it as roti canai. It’s the same thing. You’d find this warung pretty close to the immigration checkpoint. It’s swarmed with customers every single morning. Try one of their rotis out and you’ll understand why some people pay daily homages to the shop!
Restoran Kin Hua, Bandar Johor Bahru
The shop gives you a glimpse back into your past and your childhood. It’s an old-styled kopitiam which carries a host of local deliciousness like mee siam, mee rebus and nasi lemak. Kin Hua is also very well known for their special coffee brew and a perfect classic to go with it – kaya toast.
Hiap Joo Bakery, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee
This is baking done the traditional Chinese way. All the goodies are done via a wood burning oven. Their banana cakes are the stuff dreams are made of.
Kedai Masakan Itik Taika Huat
This stall is found in a small housing area at Jalan Kilang Nanas. The third generation of family members run the business which has been in operation since the seventies. The duck meat is braised for hours (And hours more) until it’s juicy and tender. It’s served with kuey-teow noodles that’s in a bowl brimming with luscious braising liquid and delectable duck meat.
You’d also be able to get sides of fermented veggies and braised beancurd.
Ambang Pesona d’Cerry, Jalan Yusof Taha
The stall serves fantastic Malay breakfast. Its known all around town for the best nasi lemak plate, but my personal favorite is the lontong rendang kering. This dish is served with curried beef, rice cakes and an awesome peanut sauce.
W W Laksa House, Taman Water Works
This Johor take on a laksa is a bowl of its own. You’d be getting beancurd skin, beansprouts, and dried tofu, but you could also top it off with otah to make a unique laksa experience!
CSS Stall, Jalan Badik
Durian puffs like these, I guarantee you won’t get to find anywhere else. The uncle behind the business has been at it for 16 years now, and he ensures only the best quality of durian meat goes into the puff, which is coated with a crunchy batter.
Pisang Goreng Mawar, Jalan Sungai Chat
The bananas used to fry these babies are brought in all the way from Perak, and coated in a special family trade secret batter. A plate of fried bananas is also served with their signature dipping sauce.
Kerala Curry House, Kim Teng Park
Banana leaf meals are a big deal, and Kerala curry house prides itself in serving up the best mutton curry in town to go with it.
Mee Rebus Stulang Laut
I love the spring of yellow noodles, especially when they’re coated in a nutty gravy and served with pieces of fritter. No one does them better than this place, that’s for sure!
