The moment you pass by an Old Chang Kee store, you’re pretty much drawn in. I mean, who can resist its smells of curry puffs and fried snacks on sticks?
Did you know these facts about the company though? As written on their website, they say that “It all began with a puff.”
Thank heavens it did!
The Beginning
Old Chang Kee, at one point, was nothing more than a tiny stall inside a coffee shop close to Mackenzie Road’s Rex Cinema. Everyone would travel to try the curry puffs, so much so that it was fondly called the Rex Curry Puff.
The Company Hires Older Workers
Take a look at the dedicated staff they have behind the counters, and you’ll know their actions speak for themselves! You can read more about this here.
There Are Outlets Abroad
Yes, our country’s favourite curry puffs have travelled to Indonesia, Malaysia and even Australia!
Sub-Brands Under Them
Other than Old Chang Kee, the same company brings you Mushroom, Dip n Go, Bun Times, Curry Times, Curry Times, Curry Times Tingkat and Take 5. Now you know ah. Not one only – got so many.
Can Join Their Franchise
Dreaming of owning your own Old Chang Kee outlet? Make it a reality instead! There are some pre-qualifications that must be had. Only candidates which are shortlisted that meet the criteria will be contacted.
They Have Breakfast!
No curry puffs – but you have a whole selection to spoil your tummy in the morning. From chicken wings and fish fillet to mee siam, chee cheong fun, otah and of course, nasi lemak!
Their Bestseller
You love Curry – O? So do I, and everyone else, apparently. Really though, after a bite, you feel like you’ve gone to curry puff heaven.
How Many Customers in 5 Minutes?
When it’s peak hours, their sellers serve an average of 25 customers within that short timeframe. Crazy leh.
What Are Their Peak Hours?
Curry puffs generally get ambushed from 7.30 am – 9.30 am and 5.00 am to 8.00 pm. Basically the best meal for someone who’s on the go and wants to get something tasty inside, quick!
Crimping is Done By Hand
You’d expect that the way the curry puffs are flying off the shelves, it’d be crimped by a machine. But nope, the company is keeping it real and old-school by doing it the best way – by hand. Gotta hand it to them, they’re doing a fantastic job!
Old Chang Kee’s been around since 1956 (wah, way before any of us were born!) but if there’s one thing that’s stayed true till today, it’s the taste and quality of the curry puff. Don’t expect them to disappear soon, or at all. If anything, we can only hope that there’s many, many more outlets bringing us Curry Os, Spring Os, Gyozas and Carrot K8. Anyone wants a Green Bean Feel’in thrown in for dessert too?
Damn, all this talking has got me wanting an Old Chang Kee curry puff. I wonder if they got delivery or not?
