If you’ve watched The Conjuring 2, you would’ve realised one thing.
The Nun was creepy af.
Indeed, my non-existent brother still refuses to call its name, for fear of seeing a non-too-friendly face staring back at him in the mirror.
But did you know that there’s actually a spin-off based solely off this comedic nun?
Or that the release date might actually be sooner than you think?
Well, if you don’t, now might be a good time to.
Right Valak?
Hahaha so cute. Said no one ever.
Maybe except for Valak’s mum. If she had a mum.
But seriously, someone should get the mum to one of those parenting sessions.
1. Synopsis
All good movie write-ups have one thing in common, and that’s the synopsis. As such, here’s the synopsis to hint that this article is actually a pretty good one:
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.
And yep, that’s the synopsis. Exciting. Cutesy. Romantic. Splendid.
But I wonder who the demonic nun in question is though…
Oh right this woman.
2. Trailer
Another staple of a good movie write-up is a trailer, even though technically we did not produce it or anything and are pretty much just including it without the film producer’s permission.
But let’s not tell James Wan that, shall we?
Affable, hilarious and slapstick, this is the acclaimed horror movie we have been waiting for.
Nun-flavoured popcorn, anyone? It tastes… savoury.
But anyways, we’ve also done horror trailers as well; in fact, one that’s about a zombie apocalypse right here in Singapore. Here, take a look (okay, it’s a sponsored video with Singapore Discovery Centre but the idea is there lah):

3. It’s a spin-off
That’s right, Valak actually proved so popular in the Conjuring 2 that she warranted a spin-off of her own.
Movie poster:
If you noticed, the movie’s called The Nun.
Not Valak, not The Nun From The Conjuring, not The Conjured Nun, not the Nun That Turned from Hell but The Nun.
Because nuns are creepy enough as it is.

4. Cast
And I’m not talking about the one you attach on broken arms and legs, though from the looks of it I won’t be surprised if someone de-attaches his/her limbs in the movie.
Rather I’m talking about the cast members because they are the ones who are gonna get scared shitless for our entertainment. Yay.
Incidentally, Bonnie Aarons will be reprising her role as Valak in The Conjuring 2.
A sure plus point for horror fans, I’m sure.
- Demián Bichir as Father Burke
- Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene
- Jonas Bloquet as Frenchie
- Charlotte Hope as Sister Victoria
- Ingrid Bisu as Sister Oana
- Bonnie Aarons as Valak / The Nun
- Jonny Coyne as Gregoro
- Mark Steger as The Duke
- Sandra Teles as Sister Ruth
- Manuela Ciucur as Sister Christian
- Ani Sava as Sister Jessica
- Jared Morgan as Marquis
- August Maturo as Daniel
- Claudio Charles Schneider as Demon
However, it’s not directed by James Wan, though he was one of the two writers.
4. Fifth instalment
The Nun will be the fifth instalment in the Conjuring universe, following titular works The Conjuring 1 & 2, as well as Annabelle and its sequel.
Thoughts: Fifth one? It better be five times better than The Conjuring.
#fingers crossed
But here’s the thing. Despite being the fifth instalment, it’s also at the same time expected to be…
5. The first film
Or at least chronologically, anyway.
During the filming of Annabelle: Creation, Safran revealed that The Nun would chronologically come first in The Conjuring franchise’s shared cinematic universe, making it as a further prequel to The Conjuring series and Annabelle series.
“We have a board that we created that has what we hope will ultimately be our series of movies. We have it in chronological order, so we can keep track of where it all happens,” he said.
So yeah, that’s one interesting bit for you to munch on.
Though it’s still too Valak-y for my taste.

6. Release date
The film is slated for a release date of 6 September 2018 in Singapore, which is like 2 months away from now. Just so you know, by then, the Hungry Nun Festival is still on.
But really, we could have gotten it as soon as…
7. 13 July 2018
Like seriously. According to Wikipedia, The Nun was actually scheduled to be released on 13 July 2018, which is a Friday the 13th.
But it seems that complications arose, as it was announced in February 2018 that the film’s release date has been postponed to 6 September 2018 instead.
8. A potential sequel
If The Nun becomes a commercial success (which I’m pretty darn sure it will), a sequel could actually materialise.
On August 2017, Conjuring director James Wan was open to a sequel to the demonic nun’s escapades.
“I do know where potentially, if The Nun works out, where The Nun 2 could lead to and how that ties back to Lorraine’s story that we’ve set up with the first two Conjurings and make it all come full circle.”
Now I’m aware I haven’t watch The Nun yet.
But I’m already amped up for the sequel.
Makes sense? Totally.
After all, an antagonist who gets her own movie should be more popular than Justin Tan. I mean, Justin Bieber.
9. The Crooked Man
Valak might’ve caused us all to wet our pants in the theatre, but there was another underrated monster in the Conjuring sequel that made Valak look like a mere angsty nun in comparison:
The Crooked Man.
Having creeped the hell out of everyone with his delightful transitions from a terrifying dog to a possessed child, The Crooked Man is truly as his name implies. Crooked.
And it seems that this entity is set for his own standalone film too, though details have yet to be released. What’s known, however, is that Mike Van Waes will be working on the screenplay from a story by James Wan.
10. The Conjuring 3
And of course, I had to save the best for last. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m proud to announce that…
The Conjuring 3 has been announced.
Indeed, the much-anticipated sequel to smash-hits Conjuring 1 & 2 is currently in development, and while details have yet to be revealed, rumours have arose that the plot will revolve around our loveable titular characters Ed and Lorraine, who will be investigating a new case in the 80s.
(Even Mr Lee is excited)
They say that good things come to those who wait. And it seems that The Conjuring 3 is one of them.
Of course, if you’re very strict about it, it’s supposedly The Conjuring 6.
So what are you waiting for?
Oh right, the movie’s not out yet. Damn.
But hey, if you’re feeling peckish for a good horror movie, you can always check out Hereditary, a critically acclaimed film that’s currently playing in cinemas.
And according to Pretty Girl 99, it looks pretty darn creepy. Or at least from the trailer alone.
So yeah, we reckon it’s pretty well worth a watch. 😉
If not, The Nun is waiting for you during the Seventh month.
