Unlike other countries which are deep in culture and history, Singaporean cuisine is diverse and local cuisine if often derived from the different ethnic groups. Singaporean food is also associated with food from Indonesia, Peranakan and Western influences. Here are 10 foods that define Singapore culture – do you agree?

Hainanese Chicken Rice
Chicken rice is simply the icon of all Singapore food. It is known that Singapore is famous for its chicken rice, even to foreigners from all parts of the world. They will try this popular dish when they visit and many foreigners have actually claimed that they liked it. Chicken rice is also our most convenient answer to every lunch time when our friends ask “Eh what to eat ah?”

Chilli crab
Chilli crab is also one of the most popular food in our Singaporean culture. Most of us love chilli crab, the savory sweet sauce with a tinge of spiciness. And don’t forget the buns to go along with the chilli sauce!

Nasi Lemak
Eaten by every race in Singapore, nasi lemak is one of our favourite comfort food. Nobody really found a reason to dislike nasi lemak, or maybe there is but we don’t care!

Laksa
Yes, this delicious bowl of goodness is still a local favourite. Even though the weather in Singapore actually forbids us to consume such a hot dish but we will find a way to deal with it.

Roti Prata
Oh, the one food that is suitable for anyone no matter the time of the way. Roti Prata at 9am? Checked. 3pm, 8pm or 1am? All checked.

Satay
Chicken satay, mutton satay or beef satay. We’ll immediately get a portion if we chance upon satay. No matter how full we are, there’s room for satay.

This may be the modern day popular food in our culture. Frozen Yoghurt is a food trend of Western origins and many of us enjoy a cup of frozen yoghurt in this tropical weather – no matter the young, middle aged or old.
