Although pretty much a kind of western cuisine, French toast has been around in Singapore for quite some time because it was easy and cheap to make. However, it is no longer the humble bread soaked with egg and fried; many restaurants have started to turn it into outrageous main courses and desserts, and here are some combinations that you can try on your own.

Nutella and banana
Everything tastes good with Nutella. Bananas are Nutella’s best friend. Enough said; just do it. I suggest spreading Nutella on both pieces of bread, filling it with slices of banana, then dipping the whole sandwich into your egg mixture before grilling it on a pan with butter. You’re just pickles and peanut butter away from Elvis.

Peanut butter and jam
Upgrade your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by making them out of French toast. Slather your bread with peanut butter and any kind of your favourite fruit jam, coat them in egg and grill away.

Sausage roll
Inspiration from the canteen uncle at my reservist camp. After coating your bread in egg, wrap it around a hot dog or sausage, keep it wrapped with a pair of tongs and fry it in a deep fryer. Ridiculously sinful; make sure your oil is hot enough so that it won’t be THAT greasy.

Strawberries and cream
Spike up your French toast by serving it with some halved strawberries and a swirl of thickened cream and honey to taste. Can’t really go wrong with that.

Cheese-filled
A little bit more trouble for a lot more goodness, cut your bread into 1-inch strips and roll in two of your favourite cheeses (I prefer cheddar and mozzarella). Skewer a few together, dip into your egg mixture and deep fry.

Nut-crusted
Before you drop your French toast into the fryer or pan, crush some of your favourite almonds, hazelnuts, cashews or pecans and coat your bread with them for an added crunch and nutty flavour. Even better with a bit of honey.

Caramelised apple topping
It isn’t as hard as it sounds. Slice an apple into thin slices and cook them in a pan on low heat with some butter. Add enough sugar to coat all the apples and mix the butter and sugar until the apples turn caramel brown, then top your French toast with it.

Chocolate cinnamon
While your French toast is grilling in the pan, throw on some bittersweet chocolate chips before flipping them, then sprinkle on some powdered cinnamon for a bit of extra bite and kick. Best served with hot chocolate or coffee.

Garlic
Stir in some minced garlic, parsley and chopped spring onion into your egg mixture and you’ll get a savoury, extra-fragrant French toast. Would go really well with a thick cream soup.

Rum and vanilla
If you happen to have some leftover rum, mix it into your egg mixture with a bit of vanilla extract (be careful, the stuff is strong) and you’ll get a breakfast for champions. Even better with ice cream.
