Every day, we are able to walk alone along the streets at night without fear of being a victim of a crime. However, many of us take this safety for granted, forgetting whom the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to make our society as such are. If you still are scratching your head and wondering who these people are, let me enlighten you.
Police officers
We see them pretty often, patrolling the streets and driving around in the vehicles to ensure everything is in order. They are probably the most well-known crime fighters among the public and because of that, many tourists have even asked for photographs with them when they come across our police.
Security guards
Although you may see them regularly at shopping malls and private residential estates, you should not belittle them. Their job is also to protect the property and to ensure all shoppers and residences are safe and sound. They make sure nobody tries to be funny within their premises and keeps the whole place or estate free from possible crime.
Army men
They roam around places like Changi Airport, looking all cool and intimidating with their rifles and stern faces. But do you know that what they are doing is not just for show and that it is actually training for them to react appropriately if anything should happen? And if you are wondering, our army men do not only protect those at the airport. They are also constantly scouring our shores, checkpoints and jetties to make sure pirates and illegal immigrants are kept at bay.
Air force pilots
Yes, some of them may be involved in the annual Air Show, which allows them to show off their professional jet handling skills. However, on a daily basis, these pilots are roaming the sky above us, keeping a watchful eye out for those who think they can somehow bash their way onto our sunny island by air.
Navy
We have covered the land and the air but how about the sea? Our Navy makes sure that our waters are free from illegal fishermen and those who try to dump toxic waste and harm our country.
ICA officer
Whenever we return from abroad, one of the first people we meet will be the immigration officers. These people are literally the line between foreigners coming into Singapore and they have to be super vigilant to ensure no sneaky or suspicious characters are allowed in to wreak havoc.
Police MRT Unit officers (Transcom)
Although a part of the police force, these officers are equipped with less firepower and don blue berets. They are in charge of ensuring that our trains and its passengers are constantly kept safe and free of danger.
SPRING officers
Many of us won’t see them in action unless you work in SPRING too. These officers are in charge of making sure that controlled goods coming into Singapore are within the appropriate specifications.
AVA officers
If you are thinking of importing a pet or bringing in plants from overseas into Singapore, these will all have to go through our AVA officers. They are the ones who will assess and test the animals and plant life to make sure they do not have any diseases that may cause harm when allowed in.
LTA officers
And last, but not least are the officers every driver disliked the most. They carry out important functions within our society, ensuring that traffic rules and regulations are adhered to. Most people think of them as annoying and hateful, but honestly, if your car is blocked from exiting the parking lot because some idiot decides to park their car in front of yours illegally, you’ll start to appreciate their presence more.
So stop spitting at them, glaring at them or cursing them and their entire ancestry tree. They’re just doing their job, you should start doing your civic duty by obeying rules too.
Over in TikTok, there’s a drama involving property agents that’s caused by us. Here’s what happened:
