We can easily rattle off the “big name” shopping centres, most of which are located in Orchard and the Central Business District areabut you don’t need us to tell you what they are, right? After all, they’re big names. However, here are some shopping centres located in the heartlands which are just as good, for many reasons.
Junction 10 (Bukit Panjang)
Personally, I think this shopping centre is amazing, solely for the Korean BBQ that is located there. Located on the first floor, Ssikkek Korean BBQ Restaurant offers really value-for-money BBQ, especially for weekday lunches (around $15).
IMM (Jurong East)
With more than 50 outlet stores, this place is paradise for any shopper looking out for good deals. Though navigating its size often makes for some exercise, if you know where to go and don’t get lost, IMM should be high on your list. There is also a large playground on the third floor, which is sure to be a hit among families. Few “top” malls in Orchard Road will have amenities like this.
Jurong Point (Jurong West)
What stands out most about Jurong Point is the organisation of its food stalls into “food streets”. They currently have a Japanese food street, a Korean one, a Malaysian street and a Hong Kong one, selling delicious food fare from that country. The decor is also out in full force, and the attention to detail is pretty commendable.
NEX (Serangoon)
The mall is pretty comprehensive in terms of the range of food options, goods and services on offer. What makes it stand out is its Rooftop Garden, which is also where a dog park is located (the first of its kind in Singapore). Next to it is a cafe (DoggieStyle Cafe) where you can relax and fill your tummy, along with your dog’s.
City Square Mall (Kitchener Road)
Described as “Singapore’s First Eco-Mall”, this shopping centre located next to Farrer Park MRT is big on being green and was designed to be highly energy-efficient. It has eco-restrooms, designated parking spaces for hybrid cars and its own urban nature park, where you can learn about ecology and green living.
