10 important questions you have to ask at your job interview to put you ahead of other candidates

Whether it is a part-time stewarding job in a restaurant or a full-time office job in a bank, most employers would want to know exactly who in the world they are gonna end up hiring and paying for his work.

The interview stage is the best time where the prospective employee and employer can get to know each other. It’s also the time to double-confirm that whatever information exchanged between both parties prior to the interview is really what it is.

For some reason, you might not be aware that the interview is a platform for the interviewee to raise questions and clear his doubts as much as it is for the interviewer. Now, if you’ve been living on the hill, here are 10 essential questions to ask your interviewer during your next interview to prevent yourself from being disadvantaged:

What would you consider an ideal candidate?
Seriously, just go straight to the point. The straighter, the better. There’s absolutely nothing wrong to ask what an ideal candidate means to the interviewer since everyone has got their own idea for that.

What is a problem or mistake you always see new staff making?
You’d want to find out the root cause of what makes them annoyed and work on it. That way, you’re proving yourself as a reliable and considerate person.

What do you enjoy most about working here?
Connect with the interviewer. Now, don’t be mistaken – this doesn’t mean that you start talking down in an over-simplified manner. You want to be able to send a friendly message but still remain professional. But of course, this may not be much of a concern depending on the situation and the type of job you are applying for.

Who will I be working with?
Whether it is with another individual or a team, you’d want to know who you’re working with. Needless to say, it’s probably going to be easier for you to work with like-minded people. Otherwise, at least you know who you shouldn’t mess with during work.

How does one get promoted (or receive a pay raise)?
You’d definitely want to know this. Unless you find yourself with too much money to spend, then maybe not (but… why are you even going for this interview in the first place?).

When and how is feedback given to employees?
The thing about communication is that people don’t realise it’s a powerful thing. A miscommunication can cause an entire organisation to break down sooner or later – the same thing for relationships, including an employee-employer relationship. You’d want to make sure that things are transparent – the good, the bad – so you can do better for the good, and correct the bad.

Do you have any advice for me?
Again, straight to the point. Find out what works and is comfortable for both parties. If it’s a reasonable advice, take it and starting learning how to become a better fit for the position you’re applying for.

How will you get in touch with me?
Well, perhaps the interviewer would get back to you via e-mail – but it just so happens that you never check your inbox… well, bam! That’s it. That monthly paycheck’s gone, for good.

How is the staff turnover here?
Right, this might sound weird, but it is absolutely normal for you to ask – I mean, if many have been leaving the company in recent times, it’s probably a sign that the company’s messed up and you ain’t gonna stay for long as well.

Do you have any last questions for me?
Now, this is just the right time to end off the interview with this one, final question. You want to make sure that they know they’re right about you and wouldn’t be surprised seeing you appearing for work the following week.

Remember, the interview stage is not the end. Both you and the interviewer can still make a decision – that’s the whole point of an interview! It’s to help you make an informed choice, a wise decision!

Anyway, whether you’re regretting your decision to go down for the interview or feeling butterflies in your stomach right now if you’re already sitting there waiting to be called into the interview room anytime – put everything else at the back of your mind, take a deep breath, and just go ace it!
