Keeping food fresh is a challenge, especially when they’re already several days old when you buy them from the supermarket. Here are ten tips for you to keep your food longer, fresher and better. But of course, if you think that it is too much work and would rather just eat bad food, then by all means go ahead.
Putting paper towels in the fridge
Moisture is a food killer, so you want to keep your fridge dry. Line your veggie compartment with paper towels to absorb the extra moisture and also to keep your fridge clean from veggie juice.
Put an apple in your potatoes
Apples release a chemical that keeps potatoes from sprouting. So if you have a bag of potatoes somewhere, just drop an apple into the bag to keep everything fresher. Sacrificing an apple for a whole bag of potatoes, worth it, no?
Separate the apples
While the apple gas keeps potatoes fresh, it causes other fruit to ripe quickly, and this easily leads to over-ripening. So keep you apples away from the other fruits to keep them nice and juicy.
Don’t refrigerate certain foods
Refrigeration kills the taste for tomatoes. Other foods that should be kept outside include onions, potatoes and garlic.
Washing berries with vinegar
Berries are awesome, but it is also expensive, and the most easily perished food. Bathe them in a mix of 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water to kill bacteria on the berries and keep them longer.
Herbs
Herbs deserve the treatment you give to flowers. Equality for plants today! Put the herbs in a glass of water the same way you do to a flower. The herbs will last much longer.
Herbs and olive oil
Another way of preserving herbs is to turn them into olive oil cubes. Freeze them in olive oil cube is the ice containers and put one cube into the pan for instant fragrance.
Raisins
Keep raisins in airtight containers to prevent them from drying out and becoming pieces of erasers.
Mushrooms
Keep them in paper bags, which can absorb the moisture and prevent them from becoming slimy goo.
Cookies
We all hate opening up a container only to find sad and soggy excuse for a cookie. But a bread in the container to keep the cookies dry and fresh for a longer period of time!
