Yesterday seemed like a good day.
The number of new cases dropped by around 900 yesterday from the previous day’s tally. What’s more, no new clusters were detected.
However, the Ministry of Health (MOH) explained that case numbers dropped due to fewer swabs being done over the weekend at Public Health Preparedness Clinics (PHPCs) and polyclinics.
It’s “not indicative that the epidemic curve is bending,” it added.
Sadly, even if with the drop, we’ve had a substantial amount of new cases in the past few weeks, meaning a small portion were bound to succumb to the disease.
9 More COVID-19 Fatalities
Nine more people died from COVID-19 complications, taking Singapore’s death toll to 162.
Those who passed away were all Singaporeans aged between 70 and 88.
Four were unvaccinated against COVID-19, three were partially vaccinated, and two were fully vaccinated. All of them had various underlying medical conditions, MOH said.
2,809 New COVID-19 Cases
For the first time in six days, new infections have dipped below the 3,000 mark.
2,809 new cases were reported yesterday, including 2,176 cases in the community and 631 in migrant worker dormitories.
Among the local cases are 449 seniors who are above the age of 60.
No New Large Clusters; Nursing Home Cluster Grows
While no new large clusters were reported, two of our active clusters grew.
One is the nursing home cluster at United Medicare Centre (Toa Payoh). With one new case added yesterday, it now has 74 in total, comprising 13 staff members, 60 residents, and one household member of a case.
The other, a cluster at ASPRI-Westlite Papan Dormitory, swelled to 237 cases after four more were added yesterday. The cluster involved intra-dormitory transmission with no evidence of spread beyond the dorm.
1,613 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 41 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,613 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
292 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 41 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Over the last four weeks, 98.5% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Monday, 83% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
One Week Grace Period for Vaccination-Differentiated Measures
As you know, unvaccinated individuals will not be allowed to enter shopping malls and large standalone stores that are not supermarkets, as well as dine out at hawker centres and coffee shops from 13 Oct, as the authorities announced on Saturday (9 Oct).
However, they announced the next day that there will be a one-week grace period for these measures.
The authorities said these measures are intended to “protect unvaccinated individuals and reduce the strain” on our healthcare system.
Some groups of unvaccinated people will still be permitted to enter these establishments, namely:
- children aged 12 and below
- those who have recovered from COVID-19
- those with a valid negative pre-event test result
