Besides Chinatown, there are many other places that also sell affordable decorations that are worth your money. In fact, they could be much cheaper!
Giant
Giant, our friendly neighbourhood supermarket, sells a great variety of paper cuttings, red packets and even flowers for Chinese New Year decorations. There are so many designs for you to choose from so can easily stay there for a few hours to get your decorations as well as food and goodies for Chinese New Year. Besides, there is air-conditioner so you do not have to worry about the heat.
NTUC FairPrice
Tell me, what’s Chinese New Year without NTUC FairPrice? They have a wide range of Chinese New Year decorations so you can get all your needs satisfied in one stop. In fact, it’s so popular, you’ll see many more part-timers during this period as the stocks flew off the shelves as fast as Hello Kitty toys in McDonald’s.
Daiso
You can definitely get a lot of great deals from Daiso since everything is just selling at $2. If you need some fake flowers for your house, Daiso is also the place to go to as they sell a range of fake flowers which can be cheaper than many other places.
After all, $2. What can go wrong? It’s one of the best places to get Chinese New Year decorations.
Pop-up stores
You can always find great deals at these pop-up stores, with items going as low as $1.80. These stores can be found in bus interchange, pasar malam or at any neighbourhood markets. If you don’t mind doing last minute shopping, then visit these stores on Chinese New Year eve and you can find unbelievable prices here. When I say unbelievable, I mean stuff for less than $1 when it usually cost $18. #OMG

Chinese New Year decorations in Ikea? Really? Well, yes! If you haven’t visit Ikea during this Chinese New Year season, it is time to head down to one of the stores! You’ll see various Chinese New Year items like potted plants just for Chinese New Year, goodies and other household items that carry the festive vibes.
Mustafa Centre
While you may not be able to find exactly paper cuttings for Chinese New Year decorations, you may be able to get some flowers or some other items that are brightly coloured to put around the house. Well, Chinese New Year is not only about red packets and paper cuttings.
And the best part? Go do your shopping at 3:00 a.m. if you want to, since it’s open 24 hours!

As SKP is conveniently located at many neighbourhood shopping malls, it is the place to visit if you are too busy to travel anywhere far. This chain isn’t just selling plastic bags; they sell many different types of decorations as well as other items that may come in handy during this season.
Waterloo street
At Waterloo Street, there are many small shops or pop-up stores that sell items at very low prices. If you have the time, it is better to visit the place during the weekdays so as to avoid the crowd on the weekends.
And oh, be prepared to be bathed in red.

Located in Plaza Singapura, Spotlight sells a whole range of DIY products and materials that allow you to make your own decorations. If you want your decorations to be more special, why not make your own so as to prevent buying decorations that can be found at every single store. With many tutorials up online, you can easily make your own.
Takashimaya Basement 2
Although many will find that the event hall at Takashimaya does not sell cheap items, if you go with a group of friends, you might be able to get various items at discount. Otherwise, if you go there nearer to Chinese New Year, some items may be on sales.
Just think of this place as an air-conditioned Chinatown with slightly more pricey stuff.
