I’m sure all of us have awesome memories of our secondary school days but we also cannot deny that there were some not so good ones that we’d prefer to forget. Here are 10 things that you probably don’t miss about secondary school, especially when you are probably enjoying so much more freedom now.
Hair has to be neat and tidy.
Boys’ hair had to be above the ear and girls’ hair wasn’t suppose to touch the collar. Even your fringe had to be pinned up and not cover your eyes. Dyed hair was not allowed and only black hair accessories could be used. We all looked like nerds, and not very good looking ones at that with all these restrictions.
Getting punished
We got punished for almost everything! Nails too long, punished. Hair too long, punished. Uniform not tucked in, punished. And the list goes on. That’s the life of a student.
Must wear uniform
Why did so many of us want to go to Polytechnic after ‘O’ Levels? Because we wouldn’t have to wear uniforms anymore! It was so boring wearing the same thing every single day and we could not express our individuality that way. If we did, we would probably get punished. Refer to point above.
No make up
Not even a tinge of foundation. So that also meant that there was no way we could hide that ugly pimple on our nose that made us look like a witch too. Which meant that our crush would see that monstrosity and avoid us forever. Yikes!
No jewelry
I have gotten caught for this a few times. No jewelry unless your parents justify that there are religious or personal reasons for you doing so. Even earrings for girls had to be simple gold or silver studs, no fancy, dangly things. Otherwise, refer to point 2.
Cannot wear ankle socks
Actually, I never really understood this. What’s wrong with wearing ankle socks? Aren’t they still socks? Some of my teachers claim that they would not be able to know if the student was wearing socks of another colour if they wore such socks. Whatever you say teach’! I’m going to wear all the ankle socks I want to right now!
Must wear ugly, white-washed BATA shoes
Only white school shoes were allowed. And even the designs of the shoes were controlled. What happened in the end was that all the students wore only white BATA shoes.
TAF Club
Who ever liked to be called up for TAF Club? I remember feeling slightly disgusted when this classmate I was dating was called up for it (he’s really hot now by the way). It was almost like proclaiming out loud that you were overweight and needed to lose some of that excess baggage. If it was bad for the boys, it was worse for the girls.
Must sing National Anthem and school song, and say the Pledge every morning
We all just kind of hummed along to the songs and sometimes did not even recite the Pledge. Why? Because we had to do it every single day and as teenagers, that was boring. How many of us still remember our school song now?
Remedial classes
I kept the worst for last. Nobody liked staying back after school for even more lessons. But because you failed a test or forgot to do your homework, you didn’t have much choice. While some remedial lessons have proven useful, most of the rest were just time wasted.
