We know that DIY-ing sounds way cooler and less pricey than engaging a contractor or a bathroom specialist in designing your bathroom for you, but that also comes with additional costs on top of the cheaper price that you pay. We are not trying to hurt your ego, but it’s just that some of these tasks require more practice in the field. Many might light up at the idea of purchasing your bathroom accessories from e-commerce sites like Taobao because they sell these products at a fraction of a price as compared to when you buy from showrooms in Singapore. But, all these savings comes with a catch.
Stil not convinced? The pointers below will change your mind.
1.What you see online is not always what you get
For example, we came across a story of this unfortunate lady who bought her bathroom accessories off Taobao at an extremely affordable price, only to find out that the piping system did not match that of her home’s – or that of the HDB flats in Singapore because the plumbing system works differently in various countries. Because of the incident, she had to find ways to hack into the plumbing system – which came with additional costs of hiring contractors and workers for the job. Worse part? These bathroom accessories did not last for long, and she had to spend more money to fix it or to buy another set.
So, moral of the story – why do through such troubles when you can save costs by getting a bathroom specialist to help you with it?
Why not get from an on-line bath store that has an in-store showroom, so you can shop on-line and you can see the actual product if you want to.
2. You need a translator
Unless you are a pro in Chinese, we suggest you not risk it, nor use Google translate because some of their translations are not accurate. Haven’t you seen enough of those translation fails already?
3. It takes time for the items to arrive
Once you buy something online, you have to factor in the shipment fees, delivery fees, and then wait for it to board the ship to Singapore, etc. Plus, there might be a chance of it being delayed. You won’t want to move into a house without a toilet bowl to shit in right.
4. You’re not guaranteed to get the best quality
Because you cannot see the actual product, you cannot do quality checks for bumps or cracks, nor can you ask for an item exchange without having to wait for a least a month.
5. You can’t be sure if it fits the piping system
You know how you buy clothes online, and sometimes the clothes you buy turns out to be too sheer, or in the wrong color? Worse, the sizing is all wrong and it looks weird and funny on you. Okay, same logic. Don’t make the mistake of buying a bathroom accessory that’s either too big or small for your pipe – they won’t be happy, neither will be your wife.
Some products may also not be approved by the local authorities for use in Singapore, which may get you into trouble down the road.
6. You thought it was a good buy and you saved money. Well, not really
Well, even if you want to plan yourself, you still need to hire contractors or servicemen to help you install the bathroom equipment. It’s good to have a good recommendation from bathroom specialists.
And what if those bathroom wares & accessories start rusting and degenerating? You need repair or replacement, so you don’t exactly get a lot of savings out of it.
Why waste the money to buy two of something, when you can just save on one good product, right?
7. You can’t shop with a peace of mind
Getting bathroom products from unreliable suppliers, on-line or overseas might be a nightmare. Always consider getting your goods from established and reliable suppliers with excellent after-sales service and support, not only you get the best products but you also have a peace of mind.
8. You can’t get your dream bathroom as awesome as you want it to be
Don’t be restricted just because your planning it by yourself, get a specialist to help you to make your dream bathroom. Example, why not have your own spa inside your bathroom? Possible? Yes! We found this awesome steam bathroom concept at Hemsley.
If you want to try drop by their showroom and ask how you can install the same into your own home.
9. You can’t get an expert’s advice
Imagine moving into your new home and having to face the pressures of renovating your bathrooms on your own. There’s no one to turn to if your sink happens to be too big for your bathroom, or if you realize that your toilet bowl can’t be flushed. Neither do we want you to wake up in the middle of the night with a burst pipe – yeah you get our drift.
10. You just don’t want to risk it
Unlike clothes that can be thrown away, you can’t throw away your entire toilet if anything goes awry with your bathroom accessories – they are permanent. Therefore, it is best if you always have a bathroom expert to advise you on the best fittings.
Oh, and for those who are living in an HDB flat, don’t forget you will also incur extra costs to fix up your neighbor’s pipes too. Let’s try not to offend those pesky neighbors who will milk the renovation costs out of us and make our lives a living hell.
