The working world isn’t what it’s cut out to be for most of us. I remember expecting it to be so much fun as a kid, like I can’t wait to own a car and drive and work in an office! What was I thinking? Definitely not what I signed up for. I’m sure it’s the same for you as well. Then again, it’s all part and parcel of life. There’s no quitting adulthood even if you want to.

Here’s 10 things we wished we told our 21 year-old selves that could probably have lighten the blow of adulthood. Well if you’re 21, maybe this might be of some help to prepare your for the real world.

Start Saving Money Now
Those few dollars/ringgits you save now will go a long way. These days, even with a day job that pays well, money is like water. Your life would be less of a burden knowing you have some money stashed safely in the bank for rainy days and trust me, those days will come so you must be prepared.

Don’t Listen To The Doubters
Whatever you do, don’t let them get to you. Don’t kill your dreams just because you’re told it’s unrealistic or that you’re better off doing something else. Just remember to work hard and don’t just be all dream but no action. Doubters make great motivators. Keep that in mind.

Less Partying, More Quality Socializing
Waking up with a hangover once or twice (or more) a week is not fun. Not to mention how it just burns a hole in your pocket (and your liver). The thrill is very short-lived. Instead, spend quality time building meaningful relationships with people over coffee or lunch etc. in broad daylight.

Friendship: Quality Over Quantity
Growing up, leaving secondary school, going to university and then entering the working world is quite the transition. So just know that along the way, you’ll lose friends. Don’t waste your time keeping up with those who have drifted apart from you. Instead, continue nurturing relationships with people who are still at your side.

Self-Improvement Doesn’t End- Period
Whatever you do, just remember that life is a teacher so accept its lessons. Learn from mistakes be it work or relationships and do better and never stop improving yourself. Life won’t change for the better if you don’t begin with yourself. There’s also no point complaining.

Don’t Rush Into Things
Always weigh your options and broaden your horizons before taking on anything. Life isn’t a one way street. Opportunities always come around when the time is right. Just be patient. So if you want to take a gap year? Go ahead. Want to wait until you’re financially secured before settling down? Good, do that.

Spend Money On Experiences, Not Possessions
That pair of shoes you bought because you thought they were cute will go out of style and wear out after some time. So if you want to spend on something worth your while, go somewhere and experience an entirely different culture or invest in a new hobby. The benefits are more lasting.

Start Your Day Early
It’s time to get into the good habit of waking up in the morning without hitting the snooze button. Don’t waste the day away especially when there’s so much to live for. You’ll get more done and achieve so much more in the long run.

You Will Not Have It All Figured Out
Just because you’re 21 and a fully functioning young adult, don’t think you’ll have it all figured out any time soon. You’re lucky if you can get your shit together by the time you’re 30. It doesn’t happen often.

And It’s Okay
Just enjoy the ride that is life itself. There are bound to be ups and downs but what matters is the journey, not the destination. Keep going and remember to always be grateful for the present because gratitude will take you far.
