10 things we all miss about life in the 90s that we can never relive again

Here’s to the kids, the people who have lived their lives in the 1990s. This is the period before the new millennium, where memories of outdated things form much of our lives when we reflect on it. Heads up, prepare for the nostalgia that’ll hit you like the SBS non-aircon bus.

Phua Chu Kang
PCK, with his iconic “Don’t play play!” was THE BOMB on the TV. Who can ever forget our Singaporean contractor, and his happenings with his family? It was PCK that glorified Singlish too, lor.

Old fashioned playgrounds
Nowadays, playgrounds look plastic-ish with is bright coloured-slides and poles. In the 1990s and before renovations to the playgrounds, play areas are most made of concrete with pastel tiles.

Dial up connections
Have you heard the noises made by dial-up connections? Well if you haven’t heard for a long time, go on to YouTube, type “Dial up sounds”. Sit back, and let the era of slow internet hit you.

OHP
For those born in the 1990’s the OHP signifies a non-whiteboard lesson, and it was a fascination to watch your teacher use a black marker to write on a clear sheet. The teacher will sit in the middle of the room after wheeling the OHP there. Oh, the good memories.

Pop Pop
Pop pops are actually snaps that contain – wait for it – high explosives. Yes, in the 1990s we got to play with explosives. How cool was that? Throwing it on the ground, while it makes a sharp pop sound. Sadly, it has been banned due to safety concerns. Sometimes, we wonder why adults even let us play it.

Digivice
The era of Digimon, the monster anime from Japan also modelled after Tamagotchi. Feeding your digimon, shaking the Digivice was the thing.

Beyblade
Another amazing trendsetter of Japan, Beyblade put spinning tops back in vogue again with its anime and toys. You battle it out with your friends, with Beyblades hitting each other as they spin in the arena.

Liang Po Po
Jack Neo’s alter ego was Liang Po Po. No one can forget Liang Po Po’s bent back and walking cane and funny comments as she makes her appearance in channel 8.

The Non-Air Condition Bus
The non-air conditioned bus by SBS had navy blue seats, and its windows have 2 metal poles across it. You also use a bus card and slot it in the machine. During a time when both air con and non-air con buses were in use, you groan as the non-air con one arrives first. Now you cry for its loss.

Pagers
Pagers were the main form of communication before the Nokia phone over took it. The beep of your first pager is a sound you’ll never forget, even after owning the iPhone.
