Let’s face it. Although travelling is always a great idea and we all love to get out of our tiny little red dot, there are certain things in Singapore that will make you feel homesick even though you have looked forward to this vacation for what seems like forever.
Here are 10 things in our sunny island you only miss when you’re overseas. Do you feel the same way we do?
Your data usage
Surfing the net freely overseas will come with a price, and usually, a pretty hefty one unless you split among your travel clique for a WiFi router. If not, you’ll find yourself just dining in a random café simply because: Free WiFi.
Not having to walk marathons
If you have been to Europe or Japan, you’ll know what walking truly means unless you take a cab or rent a car. Don’t you miss how accessible our small country is or when walking means a 10-minutes walk?
Simple subway system
Although Singaporeans are always complaining about our train system, we can’t help but miss it when we’re overseas. Do a research on the London Underground subway, Paris Metro, or Tokyo’s Metro and get ready to cry. You’ll be amazed by how complex and extensive some subway systems are out there.
Getting a cheap meal
You can probably get a meal in a Kopitiam for $3 in Singapore as compared to some countries such as Korea or New York. Average meals in a first world country could probably cost $6 and above.
Asking for directions
If you need directions in Singapore, there’s Google Map. If you need directions in Thailand or Korea, you’re screwed. Unless you speak the language or has a higher than average IQ.
Your Singlish is understood
Your command of English is pretty much understood by everyone, you won’t really have communication problems. When you go overseas, be prepared to be stared at in confusion. It happens.
Nobody will laugh at you for being Asian
This is the hard truth, and racism happens.
Ubering in Singapore
You’ll miss calling for a taxi in Singapore, and how easy and convenient the process is and the efficiency of the driver. These things we took for granted in Singapore do not take place in big countries with so many states.
ALWAYS using a map
You’re always on the map every 10 minutes to check if you’re on the right track. You don’t have to do this annoying thing in Singapore, do you?
Converting the foreign currency to SGD before you buy something
The ultimate must-do-thing when everyone goes overseas. You’ll have to keep count in your head mentally or whip out your calculator to check the price of every single item you want to buy. Everything was so clear cut back in SG: cheap, buy; not cheap, let it go.
