We all have heard of how “evil” mirrors could be: that deep within these innocuous reflective board, there lives a spirit, or the darkness side of ourselves. Many of them are old wives’ tales, but some of us tend prefer to err on the side of caution, because why not?
Here’re ten things that you shouldn’t do to your mirror – that is, if it’s possible lah.
Leaving mirrors uncovered
When you have a family member who recently passed away, you have to cover up all mirrors at home. It is believed that the deceased soul will be trapped behind that piece of glass if you do not cover up the mirror.
Candlelight
If you’re at a candlelit dinner with your SO, and you have an urge to check your makeup with your pocket mirror, don’t do it. Just excuse yourself and check yourself in the restroom instead. According to legends, you’ll have bad luck just by looking at the mirror when sitting by candlelight (there’s just some bad blood between mirror and candles).
Looking at mirrors at the wrong place
It’s better if you do not enter a deceased person’s room at all, because it is also believed that if you look at the mirror in the deceased’s room, the next one who will die is you. This is a little extreme, since there’s definitely someone who’re going to see it, so take this with a pinch of salt.
Babies
Babies should never look into the mirror during their first year when they’re born. It could bring bad luck to the baby. You don’t have to give your newborn baby a mirror to let them know how cute they look, because they wouldn’t know what’s happening at that age either. You know what’s the best way to let your babies see themselves, since it’s 2017? Use your phone instead.
Hanging mirrors at unsafe places
Why do you need mirrors at any other part of your home except the bathroom or your wardrobe? Hanging mirrors at unsafe places is actually a bad idea, because it is believed that when a mirror drops and breaks by itself, a family member will die soon.
Do yourself and your family a favour by not hanging mirrors unnecessarily, and if there’s really a need to, make sure it’s hanged properly and firmly.
Breaking a mirror
Ah, the one that everyone should know. Breaking a mirror is believed to cause you bad luck for seven years, although no one knows why it’s seven years instead of seven days or seventy years. Now you should pity those actors or actresses who often have to punch the mirror for that dramatic effect, eh?
Too low
The position of the mirror in your house is important too: go and have a quick check on whether there’s any mirror being hung too low for the tallest member of your family. All mirrors should be able to show a reflection starting from the head, so if there’s any mirror that’s too low for your tallest family member, it’s time to adjust it, or it may cause headaches.
Bloody Mary
Go to your bathroom at night, close the door, look in the mirror and chant “Bloody Mary” for thirteen times. It is believed that “Bloody Mary” will appear after you complete the steps above and she will kill you, gouge your eyes out or pull you into the mirror together with her. If you’re so bloody free to try this out, please use your bloody time to do something more bloody useful in your life.
Gift
I don’t know what you’re thinking when you decide to give someone a mirror as a gift, bu here’s the belief: giving someone a mirror as a gift may change his life for the worse. But what if his life is already shitty? That, I don’t know, because everyone seems to be humble-bragging on Facebook.
3.33am
It is believed that if you look through two mirrors at 3:33 a.m., one front and back, and on the 13th reflection, you’ll able to see how you look like when you die. There was a Taiwanese show that tried this out, when they look at the 13th reflection, it was dark, very blur and scary, don’t try this at home! You really should be sleeping at 3:33 a.m., you know.
