Have you ever been bumped into by someone while crossing the street, and the first thing you did was mutter an apology? Five minutes down the road, you wonder if it was worth the sorry in the first place.
Some of us apologize so often that it’s like an accepted phrase that’s subconsciously blurted out. We do so without giving a second thought to what we just did or didn’t do.
These are 10 things which can happen to you at any time, and you needn’t say sorry for. Ever.
Asking Someone to Speak Clearly
I don’t pretend I heard someone’s message when they’re mumbling something at me. I ask them to please repeat themselves. Yes, and without the word “sorry” at the beginning of my sentence.
Pointing Out a Mistake
You see a glaring error in your colleague’s work. Let them know that there’s something wrong with it, and don’t apologize when you start the conversation.
Using the Bathroom in a Plane
You’re booked in to sit at the window seat, and halfway through your journey, you need to go. BADLY. Politely ask the person next to you to make some room as move towards the aisle, even If it means crushing him a bit. But this doesn’t need an apology.
MRT Guy’s Stepped Your Toe Without Realizing It
Yes, that skinny fella just put his entire body weight on your big toe, and boy he ain’t that light after all! Get him to move his body weight with an “excuse me”, and not an “I’m sorry!”
Getting Help
It’s alright to acknowledge that you need help once in a way. Ask for it, but don’t apologize for having to get it.
A Downright Messy House
Your house is your kingdom. There’s be days when it looks like a home improvement magazine, and there’ll be days when it looks like a dump site. If your pals are over for an impromptu visit, it’s their call. Don’t say sorry for a mess you’re comfortable with. Guys, don’t use this with your girlfriend, she’s going to be mad at you until you apologize anyway.
Not Immediately Responding to a Non-Urgent Email
If it’s not urgent, there’s no rush for you to reply to an email. So don’t apologize if it took you all day and you replied it just before stepping away from your desk. Right before you signed out.
Giving a Straight-Up No
It’s your right to say aye or nay.
Being Blunt
You’re always truthful, so be proud of it.
Spending Your Money as You Like it Occasionally
You’re buying tickets for Selena Gomez’ concert. Or you want that signed jersey by Cantona. And it cost you a lot of money. But hey, you earned it so you get to splash it.
