10 Video Games 90s Kids Played That Kids Nowadays Would Catch No Balls

Ahh…the 1990s, when we have to “blow” our cartridges if they didn’t work the first time we slot them in.  The entire class (usually just the boys, though) would be divided among two groups: The Nintendo group and the Sega group, just like the current Android group and Apple group.

But regardless of which group you belong to, you’ll have definitely played one of these games—because not only are they classics, they’ve become part of our childhood.

Super Mario Bros (NES)

Your childhood is not completed without playing a single stage of Super Mario Bros. It’s a simple game: you move from left to right, killing enemies by jumping on them.

Nintendo has been slow (and reluctant) to create an app for this game, but after so many years, they finally released one in 2017 after the success of Pokemon GO.

Sonic the Hedgehog (MegaDrive)

Another classic by this time by Sega fanboy, the speed of Sonic moving is so damn fast that you’ll wonder whether he’s going to dash out of your TV screen.

Sega, being a software company now, has ported several of the popular classic games as apps. But having tried them, all I can say is that they’re nothing like the original (unless you’re using a controller to play the games).

There have been sequels but the first one is still epic.

Golden Axe (MegaDrive)

Long ago, people apparently paid $4 per hour to play this outside a game shop. That’s how popular this is. You’re either a fan of a six-pac man with blue underwear, a blonde with red bikini or a draft in green.

Street Fighter 2 (SNES)

Not many people know that there’s a Street Fighter 1, but who cares? All we cared back then was Street Fighter 2.

Shining Force (MegaDrive)

Fancy a game that can last you for days, or even months? It’s Shining Force for you. The last I remember, this was the first game that I realized I could save my game progress. That was, then, so damn new! And it was many people’s first RPG (though technically, it’s a strategy RPG).

Pokemon (Game Boy)

Do you know that Pokemon started out without colour? That everyone knew Pikachu’s colour only because of the box? Yeah…that’s how old it is.

Of course, nowadays, people only associate Pokemon with Pokemon Go.

Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)

Surprised that FFVII is here? Don’t be, because this was released in 1997 (you thought it’s like in the 2000s, eh?

FFVII is a game played by most, made RPG a mainstream genre and had cosplayers waxing their hair just like Cloud’s. Heck, even now in 2018, people are still cosplaying as Cloud.

Counterstrike (PC)

This is the great grandfather of PUBG and Fortnite.

Boys used to love carrying guns until they’ve enlisted to the army and realize how heavy they are.

Nowadays, people prefer to parachute into an island and fight to the dead.

Fifa <Insert year> (Any console)

You’re either a fan of Fifa or…

Winning Eleven (From PlayStation onwards)

…Winning Eleven. Because you can’t have both at one go.
