As a child, time spent away from the hustle and bustle of schoolwork and co-curricular activities, is already time well spent. It doesn’t take much to be happy. Even a day-trip to the library sufficed back during the days.
That’s why it’s truly saddening when such news comes about.
On Monday (Nov18) Bernama reported that a 10-year-old Singaporean boy had drowned in the swimming pool of cruise ship in Star Cruise Jetty in Langkawi, Malaysia.
Visitors and Staff Failed to Rescue the Boy
According to Langkawi Police District’s Police Chief, Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, the victim had been on a vacation with his mother and a friend. The victim was identified as 10-year-old, Alan Heng Kai Lun.
He added that the cruise ship, Genting Dream, had just docked in Langkawi from Singapore and was bound to sail for Phuket that evening.
In a statement given by Dream Cruises to The Straits Times it said that the medical team onboard had attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy but to no avail.
Bernama also reported that the boy had been in the pool with other visitors.
“Police have recorded statements of witnesses and the pool attendant to facilitate investigation,” said Supt. Mohd Iqbal.
Dream Cruises also said that they will be providing the necessary means of assistance to the victim’s family members.
Investigations Still Underway
The Padang Matsirat Police Station in Langkawi was alerted of the incident at about 7.30 pm that evening. During the call, they found out that it was with regard to a drowning incident that “involved a child in swimming pool of a cruise ship”.
The victim’s body was sent to the Sultanah Maliha Langkawi Hospital. The cause of the incident is still unknown and investigations are still ongoing.
The said cruise ship which had 3,000 passengers on board has sailed to Phuket that same evening at 10.30 pm.
Such accidents stand as a reminder to us all that life is precious. It also tells us the importance of being cautious and looking out for our loved ones.
