11 brutally honest reasons why every NSF / NSman should watch Descendants of the Sun

Okay, the Descendants of the Sun craze is getting a little out of control: even BBC News has reported about it, showing us that the phenomenon is way beyond Asia: it’s international. Song Joong-ki might no longer be remembered as the ex-member of Running Man anymore—he’ll be remembered as Captain Yoo Si-jin.

News media seem to show that most of the viewers are females, but let’s face it: this is not just a love story. It’s an action-packed drama, and it involves the military, too. Any guy would like it as well, especially one who has been through the army…in other words, our NSFs or NSmen who are also training to be the next Yoo Si-jin.

Here’re eleven reasons why, if you’ve been through the army, you should watch it too!

It streams online, so you can watch it in your bunk when you’ve got nothing to do
Let’s face it: unless you’re in training schools, you’ll have nothing much to do in your bunk. Instead of watching Running Man, why not watch a military drama that’s so popular with all your female friends now? For all you know, it might just give you a morale boost!

The military aspects are pretty realistic
Well, to some extent. There are bound to be some overdramatic scenes (e.g. when Yoo Si-jin had a knife fight with the North Korea soldier), but then there’re some realistic ones, too (e.g. before the confrontation with the North Korea soldier, the soldiers doing defence turn and say, “Halt, or I’ll shoot!” Isn’t that what we’re told to say?).

It shows you why you’re serving the nation
As you carry your rifle and chiong sua, you’ve got to remember that you might be the next Yoo Si-jin, whatever your rank is.

You can relate to the military lingo
Just watch the first episode: Captain Yoo Si-jin said something about “zeroing”. Unless you’ve been in the army, you won’t know what he’s talking about.
And finally, you can turn to your girlfriend and say, “Oh, zeroing hor is…”

There are pretty girls
When all you see are sausages in camps, seeing Song Hye-kyo in her mini-skirt is definitely one thing you won’t complain.

You get to see different “Number 4”
I’m not sure about you, but when I saw Captain Yoo Si-jin in his South Korea SBO (not the peacekeeping one), it just made me go, “Hey, that one looks like mine!”

South Koreans have to go through NS as well, so it’s more relatable to us
Which means it’s the same as us. When Lee Kwang-soo spoke about “This isn’t the type of rifle you use in your army”, I can just so identify with that!

They did what you’ve always want to do in NS
Who doesn’t want to be a hero? Secretly, inside our heart, we want to be a hero who saves a country, right?

It’ll make you more patriotic
Don’t take it from me: take it from the Thailand Prime Minister, who was once a soldier. If a public figure says that, it must be true.

The brotherhood is strong
Which is just like our brotherhood in camps, right? If your girlfriend or wife can’t understand why you need to go drink with your buddies every now and then, show them the drama. They’ll understand immediately.

It’s a good conversation starter
Imagine sitting down with a group of hot girls whom you didn’t know, and then telling them about Descendants of the Sun. They might just think that you’re doing what Captain Yoo Si-jin is doing in camp.
