Woodlands, to some, may be an inconvenient area to stay in and this is true to a certain extent.
This is because for a person to travel from Woodlands to town, they would have to take the North-South line, which passes by Yishun and Bishan.
However, this will no longer be the case starting from 13 Nov as 11 other MRT stations along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) will be opened.
This means that the TEL will now serve from Woodlands North to Gardens by the Bay
More than 180,000 households will benefit from the opening of these stations as they will now be within a 10-minute walk of stations.
11 Stations Cover Over 13.2km
The 11 stations are Stevens, Napier, Orchard Boulevard, Orchard, Great World, Havelock, Outram Park, Maxwell, Shenton Way, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay.
These 11 stations cover over 13.2km and will allow people to get from the Orchard area to the Marina Bay area more conveniently.
Four of the stations will have another MRT line connecting to it, making it an interchange.
Stevens MRT Station will connect to the Downtown Line, which leads people to Bugis, while Orchard MRT Station will connect people to North-South Line, which leads them to Newton and Toa Payoh stations
Marina Bay and Outram Park stations will intersect with two other lines.
Outram Park station will connect to the East-West Line and North-East Line, which allows people to access Little India and Tanjong Pagar, while Marina Bay station connects to the North-South Line and Circle Line, which gives access to Novena and Buona Vista.
You can view the new stations below (under TEL3):
Currently, only TEL 1 and TEL 2 are open, so people living in Woodlands could only head to Caldecott MRT Station before the line ended—so near yet so far from town.
Transport Minister S. Iswaran says that the new stations are a very important addition to our MRT system as they provide points for intersection with the existing MRT lines. Therefore allowing greater convenience and interconnectivity.
Free Travel on 11 Nov
To celebrate the opening of the 11 stations, commuters will be able to travel free of charge along the new stations from 10am to 9pm on 11 Nov.
With the new opening of the stations, the North-South Line should see a decrease in the number of passengers. This is great news to many as the North-South Line is usually always packed, especially during peak hours.
Stage 4, should be completed in 2024, which allows the TEL to expand all the way to Siglap.
Where as for Stage 5, which is expected to open in 2025, will allow the TEL to expand to Bedok.
