What would you do if you found a wallet on the floor?
Naturally, the answer would be to spend the money leave it at the nearest police station.
If you DO take it, however, then know that a potential police report might come your way.
Stolen 11B
Today we look at a similar situation, albeit a bit…greener.
According to CNA, James Ng Hong Quan, a 20-year-old national serviceman (NSF), chanced upon someone else’s 11B identity card in Pulau Tekong.
But if you read the header, you already know he didn’t return it.
The incident occurred sometime near the end of June 2019.
After taking the 11B, he went to a StarHub store in Bedok Mall the same month and used the victim’s card to apply for a mobile plan.
The phone, a Samsung Galaxy, cost around S$1398, with a S$75 per month plan for two years.
Ng later sold the phone to a second-hand phone shop for about S$780.
He also used the SIM card issued with the StarHub subscription plan to buy S$150 worth of game credits.
Keep in mind that the poor NSF who got his 11B was getting charged for everything.
Second Phone
But it wasn’t over.
Ng once again bought a similarly priced Samsung Galaxy phone with another two-year plan for S$78 per month, only it was a Singtel subscription instead.
He also sold off the phone for S$800 at a later date.
Ng then used the SIM card that came with the plan to top up S$200 to his Singtel Dash mobile wallet account.
The victim immediately lodged a police report in August that same year upon seeing overdue bill notices for mobile plans he never signed up for.
The bills added up to be over S$3000. That’s months of an NSFs pay!
Punishment
Crimes don’t go unpunished and for Ng, this was no exception.
He was charged on 22 September for two counts of cheating the telcos and one count of dishonestly misappropriating the SAF 11B IC.
Among his punishments were: 18 months of probation, 60 hours of community service as well as having to undergo regular urine tests.
Also, Ng’s parents have to furnish a bond of S$5,000 to ensure his good behaviour. It’s basically to make sure he doesn’t go out of line again.
For each charge of cheating, Ng could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
Just because something like a stolen card benefits you for a while doesn’t mean it’s right to use it.
