The past few weeks haven’t been exactly kind to animals.
There’s been the PDC saga which has achieved somewhat of a sad, penultimate closure, barring the PDC owner’s eventual – and-I-hope-it’s-harsh – sentencing.
There was also the curious case of a man caught attempting to smuggle four live kittens down his pants past Tuas Checkpoint on Jan 2.
He was suffice to say, caught with his pants down or up depending on whether the statement was metaphorical or literal.
Now that’s a “fur-midable” bulge ain’t it.
12 Retired Breeding Dogs for Adoption
To buck the unwanted trend, here’s a story though that might give us all hope, fur and Man alike.
On 4 January 2019, Paws N Help Outreach (PNHO), an independent re-homing facilitator, posted a Facebook adoption appeal for 12 retired breeding dogs:
If you can’t see the post for some reason, these are the breeds involved:
- Corgi (2 Female)
- Shetland (1 Female)
- Poodle (1 Male / 1 Female)
- French Bull (3 Male)
- Chihuahua (1 Male / 1 Female)
- Yorkshire Terrier (1 Male)
- Maltese (1 Female)
PNHO added that Corgis and French Bulls were not HDB-approved and that they were all retired breeding dogs aged between five to nine years old.
That would mean that out of the 13 dogs, 7 of them are HDB-approved (Yay).
Here are some of their handsome profiles:
The adoption viewing is by appointment only, and here is more info for the adoption drive tomorrow:
Date: 11 Jan 2019 (Friday)
Time: 2pm – 4pm
Venue: 59, Sungei Tengah Rd (TAL), Lift Lobby Beside Blk M
All interested parties may Facebook PM PNHO (Name + Contact + Time) during office hours to book appointment slots.
Should you also have further questions, here’s an FAQ PNHO uploaded onto their Facebook page:
Pet Abandonment and Adoption
That said, we at Goody Feed love our animals as much as we love cai peng, and would like to take this chance to do a teeny wee bit of PSA.
Between 1 July 2018 – 30 June 2018, SPCA took in a total of 1,764 animals, which included animals in various plights.
According to their 2018 Annual Report, “some had been given up by their owners, others abandoned on the streets” while “a significant number were rescued street animals in distress. ”
That my friends, works out to be about 5 animals taken in daily by SPCA alone.
And this doesn’t even include numbers from various organisation, charity groups and independent rehoming facilitators etc.
In all seriousness, if there were consolidated figures available, it wouldn’t be surprising if this daily number goes up into the double or triple digit arena.
Seriously.
So if you are looking for a doggo, meow or hophop (?) to love, please consider adopting, and not shopping.
If you are reading this and happen to be a pet owner contemplating abandonment (shame on you), please duly take note that abandoning a personal pet is punishable by law under the Animals and Birds Act:
(i) for a first offence, to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both; and
(ii) for a second or subsequent offence, to a fine not exceeding $20,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to both.
Consider yourself warned.
