We have all heard of stories of people being bullied. It’s sadly a very common occurrence in schools even though we want to believe that every child is being treated right and that their only worry in life at that point in time is how to get good grades.
Furthermore, we never know what a person is going through. Behind the laughter and smiles, one could be hiding so much pain and sorrow.
The Tragic Day
On 24 October, 14-year-old Wang Jia Le from Sichuan, China returned home from school like any other day. He had dinner and went back into his room. This all seemed normal because it was probably what he usually did after school.
However, things changed when he suddenly screamed: “Mom, I love you!”.
Shocked by the sudden shouting, his mother ran into his room to check on him only to find his room empty. That’s when she realised that her son had jumped to his death from their 14th-floor apartment and left behind two suicide letters.
The letters were addressed to her and his crush.
In the letter that was meant for his mother and his family, he apologised for leaving the world this way and expressed hope that they would respect his final decision.
He also added that despite seeming like he had a lot of friends in school because of how goofy he was, he felt very lonely and often cried himself to sleep.
It must have been really difficult for him to act like he was fine all the time so that his family wouldn’t worry about him.
In the letter that was meant for his crush, he told her to convey a message for him:
“Verbal abuse hurts a lot, regardless of whether it’s intentional or not. I hope that certain people can be kinder.”
He also told the girl to log into his social media account to post that message and tell his friends that he’s no longer around.
What Exactly Happened At School?
Like any other family who has suffered a loss this way, Jia Le’s family wanted to find out the reason why he chose to take his life and what exactly happened when he was in school.
A few witnesses said that they have seen him running up and down the stairs in their building while others said that he was crying while doing so. A few witnesses also claimed that they saw Jia Le being “scolded” by a teacher.
Despite these claims, Jia Le’s family is unable to find out the truth because the school is unwilling to reveal any CCTV footage of the day where Jia Le was seen running up and down the stairs. According to China Press, the ministry of education could not be contacted either.
A classmate of Jia Le said that Jia Le did argue with his teacher in class a few times, but it didn’t seem serious enough for him to talk about ending his life over.
His classmate also said that she remembered Jia Le telling his mother that he didn’t want to study in that class.
The Truth
We don’t know for sure what the truth of this matter is, whether he was bullied or not. But the verbal abuse that he was allegedly subjected was clearly too much for him to take and he had enough of it.
We hope that he rests in peace and that people learn to be more sensitive. Words and actions do cut deep.
