Like it or not, your siblings are the closest people you have. Through good times and bad times, there are some things only siblings would have experienced that you will never be able to find elsewhere. Here are fifteen such things that might bring a smile to your face.
Race to the toilet
When you see your sibling moving, your spider sense kick in and you rush towards the toilet, and it becomes an all-out race to see who gets through the door first.
Fighting for the front seat
The honour seat of the car is always something worth fighting for because of your perceived increase in attention paid to you by your parents, if not for pride.
Fighting in the back seat
If nobody can get the front seat, it doesn’t mean a ceasefire. Every little thing becomes a trigger for war, from the seatbelt buckle to the trespassing of a pinky finger over the seat line.
Sharing your food equally…not
Even during the most peaceful and nicest of times, you will always manage to give the smallest, most unequally unfair portion of your food to your sibling when asked to share.
Smirking at their punishment
Nothing beats seeing your pesky sibling getting shelled by your parents, especially if they’re being blamed for something that you did.
Getting called your sibling’s name
You sometimes wonder if you parents truly believe in the Singaporean pledge that much, because it seems that they call you and your sibling’s names haphazardly, regardless of race, language or religion. Or even gender.
Fighting over the TV remote
This might be less of a concern for affluent Singaporean families with multiple televisions or iPads nowadays, but I am sure some of us know the pain of scrapping and wrestling over the TV remote control.
Hiding the TV remote
And after you’ve emerged victorious in the War of the TV Remote, you’ll hide the remote somewhere so that your sibling can’t change the channel.
Panic-hushing while playing rough
And if something went wrong during that tussle over the TV remote and your sibling gets poked in the eye, you switch to panic mode and try your best to comfort him or her before the bawling reaches the ears of your parents.
Keeping that present from your parents to yourself
When your parents give you something that wasn’t given to the rest of your siblings, it suddenly becomes priceless and you find yourself hugging it under the blanket, sniggering away.
Scrambling to avoid detection
When you do use something of your sibling’s without their permission and hear their footsteps approaching, you scramble faster than The Flash on steroids.
Getting exposed by your siblings
If you thought leaving the dirty requests to your siblings was a good idea, you’ll very quickly realise it was the worst possible thing to do when they accidentally blurt your name out.
Being told you were exposed
What’s worse is when they come back and tell you that they’ve tattled on you, and the only thing you can do is run away in fear.
The non-verbal death threat
If this tattling happens in your face, there’s no doubt you would have delivered the death stare plus finger across the throat while your parents aren’t looking.
Disbelief at your sibling getting hitched
When you learn that someone is actively pursuing or likes your sibling, you can’t help but wonder how someone can actually like someone as disgusting and obnoxious as they are.
