While Singapore’s citizens were rapidly being administered with the COVID-19 vaccine as efforts were ramped up to protect the nation back in July, one incident shook the nation.
A 16-year-old boy had suffered from a cardiac arrest in no less than a week after taking his Pfizer-BioNTech jab, and was sent to hospital in a critical condition after a strenuous weightlifting session.
Thankfully, the boy is recovering well and continuing to improve.
Many investigations were launched to find out what exactly had caused him to have such an adverse reaction then, and now it’s been concluded.
Cardiac Arrest Was Likely Caused By Vaccine
Unlike many cases, where it was discovered that underlying medical issues contributed to someone’s illness following the vaccine, it seems that the vaccine itself was what caused the cardiac arrest.
On 16 August, Monday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) updated the nation of the boy’s condition and more details about the case.
Through medical investigations, the 16-year-old was found to have developed acute severe myocarditis, which led to his cardiac arrest.
He was found to have collapsed on the floor of his home on 3 July after he came home from an intense weightlifting session, carrying weights above that of his own body weight.
This happened six days after his first dose of the jab on 27 June.
MOH added that this was likely a serious adverse effect of the COVID-19 vaccine, further aggravated by the fact that he had been doing strenuous weightlifting workouts and consuming high levels of caffeine through energy drinks and supplements.
Fortunately, the boy’s condition has stabilised and he is now undergoing inpatient rehabilitation, where he is expected to get discharged in a few weeks’ time.
Although he is already able to perform daily living activities on his own, he will likely have to undergo outpatient treatment for a while after the discharge before returning to school and other activities.
So They’re Giving Him $225K
No one wishes for these things to happen to them after their vaccine, of course.
However, in the rare event it does for some, you can get a one-time compensation from the government through the MOH’s Vaccine Injury Financial Assistance Programme (VIFAP).
There are different tiers of payouts depending on the severity of the post-vaccination adverse effects – the highest, Tier 1, being $225,000 for effects resulting in death or permanent severe disability.
Currently, the 16-year-old boy is one of two people who have had side effects so serious that they qualify for the Tier 1 payout.
They are thus extending this payout to him and his family as a form of financial assistance.
It’s unknown who’s the other person who qualify for the Tier 1 payout.
Under the VIFAP, 144 applicants who have qualified are now either waiting for their payout or have received one, with the total payout under the scheme coming to $782,000 thus far.
Reminder Not To Engage In Strenuous Exercise After Vaccine
That was the reason the MOH extended the no strenuous exercise post-vaccination warning from a few days to a week instead.
Once again, they are reminding Singaporeans, especially adolescents or younger men, not to partake in strenuous activities following the first and second dose of the vaccine.
Those with symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath or abnormal heartbeats should seek for medical assistance immediately.
Anyone who developed myocarditis infection following the administration of an mRNA vaccine should also not receive further doses of it.
It’s still a rather rare occurrence that only happens every 0.48 per 100,000 doses administered, the MOH assured, saying that most affected persons have recovered or been discharged.
Better be safe than sorry and just remain a couch potato after the vaccine.
