Ever since COVID-19 case numbers crossed the 3,000 mark, we’ve been expecting it to exceed 5,000 soon.
But our daily case count has fluctuated around 3,000 instead, dipping on certain days and surpassing it on others.
This slower rate of increase is likely due to the restrictions that were reimposed to give our healthcare system a breather.
Sadly, even with this, we still have a large number of cases, a small portion of whom are bound to succumb to the disease.
9 COVID-19 Fatalities; Two Fully Vaccinated
Nine more COVID-19 cases died from complications due to the virus, bringing our death toll to 233.
They were six men and three women, aged between 57 and 100. Two were fully vaccinated while the other seven were unvaccinated.
Eight of them had various underlying medical conditions, while one who was unvaccinated had no known medical conditions.
3,058 New COVID-19 Cases
3,058 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (18 Oct), a decrease of 290 from the previous day’s tally.
The cases comprise 2,454 infections in the community, 601 in migrant worker dormitories, and three from abroad.
Among the local cases are 469 seniors above 60.
MOH Monitoring Five Large Clusters with New Cases
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said it’s monitoring five large clusters with new cases.
One of them is at Apex Harmony Lodge, which now has 12 cases after two more were added recently. Eight residents and four staff members have been infected at the nursing home.
ECON Medicare Centre & Nursing Home, another nursing home cluster, has 63 infections in total, comprising 60 residents and three employees.
The biggest cluster included in MOH’s report is at MWS Christalite Methodist Home, which now has 109 cases.
One new case each was linked to the clusters at Learning Vision @ Changi Airport and MY World Preschool @ Hougang Dewcourt.
The daycare centre has 17 cases, while the preschool cluster has 14.
1,651 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 66 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,651 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
327 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 66 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
In addition, there are 15,918 cases undergoing home recovery, 2,986 in community care facilities and 734 are in COVID-19 treatment facilities.
As of 16 Oct, 84% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
Volunteer Doctors & Nurses Need For Home Vaccination Teams
On its website, MOH appealed for volunteer doctors and nurses to join their home vaccination teams.
“Vaccination reduces the severity of illness and vaccinated people clear the viruses and recover faster. Home Vaccination Teams (HVT) have been getting more seniors vaccinated,” it said.
If you are a doctor or nurse keen to support HVT, register with the SG Healthcare Corps at [email protected] or call 6325 9220.
“We must protect as many as we can. Everyone can help!” it said.
