Sometimes, life just isn’t fair, and some people are born with disabilities. Some don’t have the ability to see, some don’t have the ability to walk like the majority of us.
Despite all these, it doesn’t make them any different from us. They should still be treated as equals. We should still treat them with the same amount of respect, obviously.
They have feelings too, and we need to be mindful of them. However, there are some people who just don’t get this and choose to take advantage of these people.
An 18-year-old deaf and mute Malaysian girl was on her way home at night along Jalan Kalumpang in Semporna when she was forcefully dragged off into a hut and raped.
What Happened
At 2am on 8 December, the girl’s father noticed that she wasn’t at home. Worried like any father would be because it is very dangerous for a girl to be out alone so late, he decided to look for his daughter in the vicinity of their house.
He managed to spot his daughter about 20m away from their house, but there was something wrong.
Very wrong.
She was sitting on the ground and sobbing, so her father asked her what happened.
She then signed to him in sign language that she had been dragged into the hut near their home and raped by three men.
He quickly checked the hut and noticed that there were four men in the hut, to which she immediately identified three of them as her rapists.
Aftermath
Enraged by the horrific trauma that his daughter must have endured, he reported the incident to the police and the three men were subsequently arrested. They will be remanded for seven days to assist with investigations.
According to Semporna OCPD Supt Sabarudin Rahmat, the girl has already been sent for a medical examination and is resting at home.
Regardless of age or gender, the impact of sexual violence is much greater than any kind of physical injury. It is upsetting that rape still occurs in today’s world despite knowing that the trauma to rape victims is immeasurable.
Hopefully, the girl is recuperating well and her rapists get prosecuted as soon as possible so justice will be served.
