The first half of October will be like your girlfriend on her period: wild and contrasting.

One moment she’s angry at you for taking the first bite of the doughnut that you have bought for y’all to share and the next she’s crying at a video of an adorable dog rolling around in mud.

And just like your girl, the weather will have you breaking out in buckets of sweat and then send you digging through your closet for your hoodie in a split second.

In other words, you can expect some days to be particularly warm and others to have intense thundery showers.

This comes after the temperature was reported to have dropped to 21.8 degrees in Yishun at 1am this morning.

The Monsoon

For those who love the stay-at-home cuddle weather, you have the monsoon to thank for the showers that are about to come your way.

For the first half of October, you will see the gradual ending of the Southwest monsoon and the start of the inter-monsoon period.

The Southwest monsoon usually occurs from June to September. Southeast winds prevail and isolated scattered showers occur in the late morning and early afternoon.

On the other hand, inter-monsoon conditions are characterised by light winds and thunderstorms that are sometimes intense.

The light winds, high moisture, and strong daytime heating of the land makes it conducive for the development of thunderstorms.

Lightning Activity Are Expected To Be Higher

Lightning activity tends to be higher during the inter-monsoon period, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS).

In the afternoon on 8 to 10 days in the coming two weeks, you can brace yourself for the brief thundery showers.

Showers are expected to happen in the late morning to early afternoon on these days- perfect for sleeping in.

Don’t get too happy yet!

MSS has also predicted that the coming two weeks are likely to be warm, with daily maximum temperatures exceeding 35 degrees on some days.

However, on most days, temperatures will range between 25 and 34 degrees.

I can already see the future- me frantically fanning myself with anything that’s in my hands.

And it wouldn’t be any better at night.

Even though the temperatures will be slightly lower than in the day, a minimum temperature of 27 degrees is expected on some days for those living in the east and south of Singapore.

Our Dear Old Friend, The Haze

For those students out there still hoping that the haze will suddenly shoot up, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but the increased rain showers in most of Southeast Asia are likely to ease the haze situations.

So I guess you can stop going to the windows to check for haze every five minutes and finally focus on your end of year exams.

However, if it makes you feel any better, we might be experiencing slightly hazy conditions on a few days, especially in the early morning.

The light wind conditions from the inter-Monsoon season makes it easy for particulate matter to accumulate in the atmosphere, hence the slight haze.

So, do be prepared to wear a mask before you head out for school!
